That motors are bipolar, and that gecko controler is also bipolar so that's the best combo, and I can have full torque of 253oz/inch and some serious movement in all directions

He,he fellas when I get going you are going to move to Slovenia
![]() For shipping I have to asked but I think that 15-20$ should be enough. And no I haven't mill anything yet, I've been bussy installing new cables for 3 phase electricity and lightning, so I'm more drilling holes through walls, I'll try milling this weekend

Why didnt you just get a phase converter? I have seen them for as cheap as $150 us. I think that would have been easyer and prolly cheaper then running wires. But hey, if you have 3 phase and can run it... more power to ya.

oooh, I'm going to have to get several custom blocks !
the design? well I remember someone posting a pyramid shaped design, I believe it was YOU ! Morphling... Yes, well I've been thinking of something SIMILAR (so of course it's not exactly the same) for ages now... I hope this machine works out for you...cuz if it does...hopefully it will work out for ME too ![]() I'm getting excited ![]()

![]() ![]() Ok, first milling test went fine, with steel bolts, I had to mill for the mounting of the vise to the table -> no problem And today I tryed milling some copper, I milled those roughly cutted 60 x ~82 mm blocks to exact 60 x 80 mm, almost like hot knife through butter, I went to straight to final measure of 80mm so I milled in 1-2 mm steps depend on how the block was cut, and it was great no vibrations just smooth milling, and also turning the wheels was easy, so now I'm very confident that those 253oz stepper with Geckodrive will work like a charm. And jd, I was thinking of adding some strong spring to negate the weight of the milling head with gearbox and motor.

Great news, I just got notice from post office that my stepper arrived. After TB 1.4 rip off, I'm always very nervous if I'll get the stuff I bought on ebay.
I'll pick up 253 oz/inch bipolar dual shaft steppers tomorrow, and get to making holders right away ![]() So only Geckodrives 201 are missing... need to get a little more cash

question: whats the diameter of the spines of the x y and z axsis and what diameter are the spines of the stepper motors and how you gonna attach both. (sorry for maybe bad spelling. and my first post i guess, im coming here for months but first time i needed to ask something ![]()

Spindels are 14 mm in diameter and the shaft on the stepper is 6.2 mm . And for connecting I intend to make coupling on lathe, so on one side 14mm ID hole, and on the other 6.2mm then srew with three bolts at 120° radial to each shaft.

hi morphling1 and oher people who have knowledge in milling + cnc i have got a few questions about your mill and mill's in common
![]() your bf2 how much W or hp is your motor on the mill. i have a mill and want to convert it to cnc too, so i researched alot but cant find all i want to know. the spindels usually have a little slack in them. that it takes some movement/time before they accually move. my mill has a little bit of that, someone told me that can be adjusted with your milling program so it takes measurement+slack. is that true? and i can use my mill for cnc and than a bit about control. i myselff am a airplane mechanic and work in mechanical buisness and i am not that good in electronics. i saw this one http://www.steppercontrol.com/s100.html. so if i am right i need that controller a powersupply for controller and a powersupply for the steppers. than i have all i need to controll right? or am i missing something? and a question about software. there are many software controle programs that are delivert with controllers. can other software been used by other controllers or is it only for 1 controller? well i would be very gratefull if you can help me with these questions. and im thanking you alot. Grtz Ted (btw sorry if its bad english or bad reading/writing but i am dutch :P )

That play you are talking about is known as "Backlash" and yes there are a few ways to combat that. First is software compensation. You take the measurments of backlash in your machine. With a dial indacator. and then program it into your controller software. What it will do is move to the desired point, then reverse the amount specified, to eliminate the backlash. There are also Special nuts you can get or make, if I rmember right they are called BSA nuts. These will tigthen up the machines lead screws. You will have to do more research on this.
I have the desktop CNC mill "MAXNC 15 Open loop" See here www.maxnc.com You will need motors, power supply and controller, there are in fact many software packages on the market (Mastercam 5 comes to mind) that are programable to your setups specs. You will also need to dowhat morph has done and design some motor mounting plates I wish ya luck, as with anything its a pain in the a$$ to do, but well worth it in the end. My english is fine, butmy spelling/typing sucks! So dont feel bad.

the specs of my mill.
http://www.theforumisdown.com/upload...0802/Fusan.jpg 120-200-370-680-1100-2000. rpm/min. its a same design as that emco mill i noticed think fusan riped it ![]() same measurement. only thing im not sure of it has same hp. that is why i asked that to morp ![]() making the mounting hardware is doable i think. and yes it will take time and lots of effort ( and lots of swearing ofcourse ![]() ![]() so software can be switched between controllers. its not like that software can only be used with that kind of controller? my next step will get a creditcard. if seen some nice things on ebay but i dont have a creditcard ![]() [edit] copy past url and it will work ;> [edit]

Yes, like Fixitt, wrote, backalash can be compensated in software, and most of the spindels have that tighting nut, I have them on x & y spindels and if I tighten them backlash is gone, and the movement is a little harder, but not that much. Find out if you have those kind of nuts on spindels.
You only need power suply that can handle load for three steppers, you connect that PSU to controler and that controler drive the steppers. The only thing I notice is that controler is conected by serial port to your computer, I don't know how this effect everything but all of the controler I saw until now were connected through parallel port. For software I will use turbo cnc which is a shareware, and is very good program for controling cnc. Check out their hp. http://www.dakeng.com/ This is the most popular decktop cnc software, with lots of users so you can get help on their forums for every problem. And this software should be able to controll all controlers which are connected through parallel port. If your mill is smaller check also this page http://www.stepperworld.com/ they have nice kits that include everything needed for cnc conversion. Then the best desktop cnc controllers are here : http://www.geckodrive.com/ This are the one I'll buy, very simple to use and can handle quite powerfull steppers.

how much hp or w is your motor on your mill? and my mill has same measurement as yours i thought i thought. so i guess i need to look for 200+ stepper motors.

morphling1, thats really good, then you don't have to worry about a fat electricity-bill. Mine is 550W whitch is ok too but i don't know how many HP's it is....
