Default Loving the Innovacool at 1/2"ID

I first installed the Innovacool kit with the standard crappy 8mm ID tubing, only to find out that the backpressure of this setup made my Eheim 1048 work like crazy, and vibrate like it really wanted another purpose in life.

I swapped the Maxxxpert rad for a BIX, replaced all the Innovatek fittings with chrome barbed 1/2" fittings, and used 1/2"ID Tygon tubing. Attached a low speed 120mm Papst fan to the BIX (at 7V), hooked it all back up, and boy what a difference!!!

With the 1/2"ID tubing and the BIX the Innovatek blocks really shine! With aircooling I got temps of 42C idle, 50C load. With this cooling setup I get 29C idle, 33C load. Case (mobo) was 42C, is now 40C.

I am quite satisfied with this setup, it is WHISPER quiet!

Congrats for the upgrade. That block is one of the best one you can get, but needs that tweak!

Sorry for the stupid question, but where do you buy the Innovatek blocks in the US?

Only 2 places I know of, and both seem to be going through their stock in a hurry. The first is highspeedpc.com, which I VERY highly recommend. The second is sharkacorp.com, whom I have no experience with.

Thanks Man, I found highspeedpc from google, but didn't know about the other. Both seem depleted at this time, but it's cool I'm just shopping ATM.

I can vouch for the service at highspeedpc and also the quality of the Innovatek CPU and GPU blocks

[SARCASM] You mean you've used them before pHaestus? [/SARCASM]

Sorry - how did you manage to change the fitting just for your Innovatec waterblock? Maybe you left the native 8 mm?

I have 2 questions?

1. Can you detail how you did that. I originally wanted that block but decided against it because I want to use 1/2 tygon.

2. With 1/2 tubing how are you able to use Innovatek's reservoir? I thought it was only 3/8.

mskreis,

As you can see from the picture posted by pHaestus, the NPT fittings do not screw in all the way. The Innovatek blocks are tapped for British 1/4"BSPP, which is not tapered like American 1/4" NPT.

But that is actually not all that bad...if you WOULD screw them in all the way, you would be blocking much of the opening inside the block (from fitting into the block) and restricting flow.

Anyway, put a little Teflon tape on and screw the fittings into the block for a few revolutions until they go no further. The plastic thread on the GPU block is a little more flexible, you can screw the fittings in about halfway.

The reservoir has the same thread as the blocks.

I still don't understand, did you widen the holes in the waterblock (1/2") or are the holes in the waterblock itself still 1/4"

No, the holes in the WBs are already 1/2" wide, but instead of having the tapered American 1/4"NPT thread they are tapped with a 1/4" BSPP thread, which is straight all the way.

You don't need to widen anything, but when you screw in an American barb with 1/4"NPT thread, you can't screw it in all the way because the NPT thread is tapered, it widens from tip to middle.

O.K. Thanks!

I live in europe, so I will be able to get the right NPT thread.
Did you do the same with the outlets on the reservoir, are the holes in the reservoir also 1/2"?

Als jij in Nederland woont, I think you meant to say that you will probably be able to get barbs with the BSPP thread , which is what the Innovatek blocks are designed for. Depending on how long the threaded sections are, be careful not to screw them in too far or you may restrict the opening into the block (goes sideways a bit).

The hole in the Innovatek reservoir (only one matters, the other slides on to the intake of an Eheim pump) has the same width and thread as the blocks. As far as the exit side of the pump goes...that depends on which model you get. The Eheim 1048 uses the same thread and width, not sure about the 1046.

I would consider getting a reservoir that you can mount higher up in your case though, much easier that way to bleed out air.

Hehe...wasn't so bad actually. It is quite wide, so at least that gives you some breathing room. I really like the Chenbro case, excellent for using 120mm fans, and very solid quality. It could have used an extra 5 1/4" slot though.

I am actually still going to replace the Innovatek reservoir by one (from Danger Den) that I can mount to the top of the case. That way it will be much easier to bleed out air. The Chenbro case has a bit of an indentation in the inside top frame, just enough to get the cap of the resevoir in between the frame and the top. And the top slides off after removing just one thumbscrew. So that will be neat and handy :-)
