Default Mounting Fans to a BIX

Currently I have a 120mm Panaflow mounted to a BIX by zip ties through through the holes on the bix. I am currently working an aluminum shroud to place bewteen the panaflow and the bix. My question is this: can i run bolts or screws straight through the bix from one sides mounting holes to the other? Any help is appreciated.

No the core under the flange is solid. I used #8x32 x 1/2" screws to attach to the flange of the BIX. If you need longer, remember that you have about 1/8" between the flange and the core fins. Note the the #8 screw is a bit big for the holes. I had to drill mine out a little to fit... but not too much or the screws will not hold any more.

I had the following tunnel the first time

120mm Panaflo-- 1/2" spacer -- BIX -- 1/2" spacer -- 120mm Panaflo

My temps were OK

I am now running just 1 panaflow attached to the BIX and my temps are great. I would try a "fair" test of both and use the cooler of the 2.

I just made a shroud that was slightly smaller than the outside of the 120 mm fan and used the fan to hold it in place:

Worked fine

I ran bolts straight through... I used 4 inch bolts.

You can run bolts straight through the BIX; 3mm diameter ones are safe enough, as illustrated below:

See? Is simple!

EDIT: By the way, Paul Vodrazka (see his Phaze 2 waterblocks on this forum) and I are working on a shroud for the BIX; he came up with a brilliant idea of a plexiglass shroud that doubles as a reservoir! ). We're working out the details at the moment (or rather, he is doing the brilliant techie stuff, I just throw up vague ideas...).

6-32 studs cut from a 3 foot long threaded rod. They don't just fall through, you gotta finesse em a bit. Using a tapered probe through the holes first helps expand the fins apart. Grind a tapered tip onto a length of stud if you don't have something like that.

I have also taken an old 120mm fan and cut out the center to use it as a spacer. I think it quiets up the BIX a bit getting the fan away from the core. If it wasn't so tedious, I'd like to whack away at some of the metal shrouding sticking up in the airflow around the core to see if it reduces the noise.
