Default found tygon tubing CHEAP!!!

Found a supplier locally that told me Tygon is a trade name.
I will check it out tommorrow and see what the stuff really is.
Price was quoted today was 28 cents per foot on 1/2 inch with 1/8 inch wall.

Of course Tygon is a trade name... so is Clearflex. They're both really only premium PVC tubing, the difference being the quality of the plasticizers used in their production.

What I meant by checking it out is seeing if it does meet the R-3606 stanadrd also will check flexibility and curvability ( not sure if that is a real word but I think you know what I mean)

Well, seeing as it (Tygon) is a trade name, I'll bet you a dollar that if they're calling it that then it meets the specs.

Yeah I had a local hose supplier tell me the same thing when I first got into watercooling. I called to see if the supplier had "Tygon" and he said "what kind? Vinyl or urathane?" Well I knew it wasn't vinyl so went down and bought 10' of what I thought at the time was really cheap Tygon. The stuff I bought wasn't Tygon, no formulation of Tygon whatsoever. Make sure it's printed right on the hose "TYGON® R-3603 or TYGON® R-1000". Those are the two formulations to look for. If it doesn't read that, then it isn't Tygon.

I prefer "Clearflex 60 TM"... has (basically) the same specs as Tygon for around half the price. It's the "other" premium PVC commonly available, and as far as I am concerned is every bit as nice as Tygon.

US Plastics has what looks like good prices to me:
http://www.usplastic.com/
I kinda like the looks of the Tygon(R) Fuel and Lubricant Tubing myself. Here is the R-1000 tubing-> Tygon Peristaltic Pump Tubing . Prices for the thickwall stuff climbx pretty rapidlly tho, is it really that much better?

peace.

Sorry this is kinda off topic, but I was wondering if you had any surplus clearflex skulemate, I remember a while back you were ordering some(100ft(m?)) on hopes and dreams - now it seems more people are selling it, but if you've got some you're willing to sell I'd be interested.

Reply, EMail or PM - all the same to me

Sorry Khledar, I sold all that I had save for a few feet that I have left over. It's really quite amazing how this stuff has become widely accepted since I bought and sold mine... at the time I seemed to be the only "fool" willing to risk buying the stuff... now everyone is selling it to us watercoolers. As far as I am concerned, it's every bit as nice as Tygon, and it's tons cheaper.

Yes skulemate I must admitt I was quite skeptical of your 'discovery' and thought gee I sure hope he has money to burn - I tend to be rather pessimistic from time to time. But good job!

Now back kinda to the topic of this thread- there was big thing about the discovery of tygon and now there seem to be similar discoveries one of which is clearflex, and I definately think that products such as clearflex and tygon are of a different 'product class' than your simple hey look at that nice roll of vinyl at Home Depot. However, once in the product class of 'professional use' tubing the differences are minimal. But beware you actually are in the product class - it sounds like from previous posts here that deceptions occurred. I guess as with everything, make sure you know what you're getting - but there's no need to pay a premium from online vendors just becuase then you know fo sure what it is - just like in high school do your homework.

OK here is the scoop on the cheap Tygon:

For all intents and purposes it appears to be plain PVC clear tubing, fairly flrxible but nothing to write home about.
Manufactuor : KURIYAMA
Model : Kuri Tec K010
1/2" I.D. 5/8" O.D.
70 F Non Toxic NSF 51
ktm1081381 19:46

Thats the info off the hose it self, I saw a small print out on some of the applications, Berverage industry type, Temp range was 25 to 150 degrees ( did not see if it was C or F

I think I can make it work but its NOT Tygon specced as far as I can tell.

Some of you who know much more than I look and see if you think I am shooting myself in the foot or will this stuff work.

Thanks again

Aardil

I did a quick Google on "Kuri Tec K010", and found the page for this make of tubing at http://www.kuriyama.com (it's on their literature page). One thing that I noticed that was of interest was the hardness of this tubing... it was given as 73 +/- 3 on the Shore A scale. Unfortunately this means that the tubing is quite hard compared to Tygon or Clearflex, which have hardness values of around 55-57. I agree that you'll be able to make this work, but it doesn't appear to be much more than your typical thickwall PVC. Sorry.

If "Tygon" is not written on tube walls, then it's not Tygon. This is a brand name from Saint Gobain and only them can produce it. Other mfgers can make equivalents (ie 'Clearflex') but obviously not with the brand name 'Tygon'.

Think am gonna give it a shot, 15 bucks total for tubing compared to 75 bucks and wife is starting to question overall cost

Since I am fairly certain I will be revamping the "y" setups ( I am thinking of getting some acrylic blocks and drilling them
instead of the brass tee set ups, maybe switch to tygon at that point.

Again thanks for your input, it is truly appreciated.

My ex-girlfriend's step father ran a supply house that sold pipes, tube, etc. According to him the generic stuff is basically identical and quite cheap. You just need to know where to get it.

Unfortunately I broke up with her a few days later and he never got a chance to show me where they get the stuff from.

...another example of timing being everything... but bummer, dude. I hope you got over it.

On-topic,
Watercooling 101 does a comparison of PVC tube, clearflex and Tygon in terms of transparency, curve factor and fitting. Results suggest that Clearflex is considerably better than PVC, but Tygon is just that bit better still when it comes to transparency, fit on barbs and bendability.

As with everything, you pay for what you get (and then some ). Clearflex is a cheap and decent alternative to Tygon.

Remember, get the family secrets BEFORE you ditch her! Args ... my father-in-law is a systems engineer for the USN and whenever I have questions about anything, he's a good guy to bounce them off of. In other words: my wife's safe until I get more educated.

... j/k ...
