Default Blow me!

I need help with fan choices on my radiator. I have 2 plans but I am not sure which would be better. I have a chevette heater core, it is 6x6x2 (2-261 aka 399069).

1. one 120mm fan mounted on a shroud. Exactly like this:
http://dtekcustoms.safeshopper.com/19/91.htm?384

2. four 80mm fans on shroud (a square 6-1/4x6-1/4x2 with dividers making it into 4 3x3x2 compartment, one for each fan).

Will pushing that many cfm's (choice #2) be any more effective than the single 120mm (everything is inside my case). My biggest concern is that I want quiet so the fan(s) will be on a fanbus, but I have had a single 120mm on a fanbus and it was not effective when turned down (Air cooling, I don't know how it would perform with wawa). What do you guys think.

What fans do you guys recommend for each size. Remember for me quiet is number 1 but I do want performance as well. Thanks in advance fellas.

The 120 would be a better choice imo. The reason is it has a higher rating for pressure. No matter how many small fans you have you will never get beyond the pressure rating of one of them. If you want more CFM just get a delta screamer and make a fanbus so you can control the noise/speed.

Not really....

Using panoflo fans...

A low speed 120mm has
68CFM flow
30db noise

But the 120x120 mm would be spread out ove the 6 x 6 area thereby reducing the pressure and flow per square in. sq.

A low speed 80 has
24CFM flow
21db

When used in a 4 pack
96 CFM flow
~26DB noise

The area covered is 160 x 160 mm. A 6 x 6 area is actually smaller and should help flow???

Make sense?? A friend of mine is using this and it is very effective and very quite

120mm? Bah, too small! Try a Rotron 172mm@5v pulling 100CFM... It's all about the LARGE overkill fans, plus the design is all aluminum construction, TubeAxial for better airflow and MUCH MUCH quieter than a standard fan. Check out www.comairrotron.com/ Look for "Major DC" fans, I got mine from an electronic depot for around $7!

Well Brian I was refering to the pressure rating of the fans. I am not going to look up numbers, but a larger fan (usually unless you get a very high rpm) generally can deal with pressure alot better than a small fan.

Wow I tried almost this exact same thing last summer. Except I used 3 panaflos and a 10 in core. Don't waste your time, you'd need 10 or 12 80mm fans to reach the flow of a single 120mm panaflo. They basically just sit there and spin without blowing any air.

I ended up buying a pair of 120mm fans and throttleing them to ~ 6v with a controller. They barely spin but my temps are 5C lower and my video card can overclock an extra 25MHz.

Never consider the actual air pressure in terms of restricting the actual flow before..... time to reconsider my position on this subject.

Now to go over the number and graphs at the panaflo site.

Papst makes a 120mm with 51CFM but only 29dba @12v, two of these in series push/pull would give only 32dba but still offer good cooling and at 7v I doubt you'd hear them. Depends on how much prformance you want with your quiet. A pair of Papst 120mm @75CFM in push pull would give more performance but at 41 dba @12v but turned down to 7v I bet they'd be around 35dba or less, not bad at all.

Another good site for quiet is silent pc see what their forums offer as well.

What 120mm fan did you use befor that was still loud at 7v?

The Panaflo 120mm are also very good

Medium is 86cfm w/ 35db
Low is 68cfm w/ 30db

Both are excellent also

V12 I looked for that fan online the first time I saw a post of yours about it, it was like a benji, so I shit my pants and forgot about the whole thing. How does that fan perform and how loud is it compared to (2) 120mm's and have you ever used (2) 120mm's in a push+pull for comparative purposes?

What do you guys think of V12's fan?

Blackeagle it was some 4 LED POS and I think the noise (it was like a whistley kind of edge on the fan noise that was annoying) was actually coming from the air running through my swifty.

Thanks again for all the help fellas, I wish my psychi...I mean everyone was as helpful.
