Default What are you waiting for? Upgrade Cycle.

Personally, I'm waiting for 90nm hammers, R450s and DDR2. I was planning a new build when the clawhammers were planned for March, but with the postponement to fall and quick change to 90nm hammers with DDR2 capability, I'm thinking of waiting until next year this time. Plus, this will allow for SOMEBODY to come out with a dually hammer board that can be OC'd nicely.

I'm thinking 2x 4000+ or higher, 2GB DDR2 (1GB per CPU), a R400 (R450 to drive down the cost), and some serial ATA lovin'.

What are you waiting for?

I'm waiting on funds!

The lack of SSE2 is making me think twice about going to Intel, but otherwise, I don't have a need for a big 64 bit CPU.

Right now, I need a HD, so I'll try to pick up something that I can reuse in the next PC.

A Geforce FX Ultra or a Radeon 9800 Pro for under $300.
A new set of rims, a new exhaust (a stock one will do), maybe a CAI and a 4-2-1 header for my Prelude.
A TM Cougar to play Lock-On when it's out. Modded with titanium guimbals, hall effect pots and a Simped F-16 rudder.
A winning lottery ticket, to afford all the above.

I plan on sqeezing a bit more out of my current setup (mainly my video card) and then sitting on it until Hammers have a chance to get into the market and become stable and extra fast.

Other than that, my I/O system is a bit lacking in drive space so I am in the middle of getting 3x Cheetah 15K 36Gb and running RAID 5. That should hold me over for a while.

I already have a Ti4600 Golden Sample, and I am not going to upgrade video till prolly early next year after Doom3 is out.

and yes I should add onto that upgrade list a Olympus E-10 SLR Digitial Camera.

Its always fun to dream down the road

my only goals are :
"It must last and run everything fast as I want for 2 years." My Dual Athlon 1.4Ghz 1GB ram has done that awesomely. Now its time to double it

Canterwood + 800MHz bus P4 Hyperthread + Corsair + 256MB Radeon 9800 + WD Raptor

all should be here in May. I've been waiting for 2 years to build a system like this. Selling off all my old stuff now to pay for it.

I want my YY cube ...

The rest... well , my setup will hold to xmas, and then i'll see whats in the market. But hey, i rarely buy top models. Paying 40% more for 10% or less performance increase , is definitly not worth the money.

My 1700+ and my old trusty gf2mx400 havent failed me, even with unreal 2, so i dont feel the need to a sudden change .

I am holding out for a video card that will truly blow me away when I upgrade. I am right at the "2nd cycle" point now (have a GF3) so I am getting the itch. I figure I'll wait until summer or early fall though and hope something really beefy is out. I am not convinced any of the current high dollar cards will run Doom3 properly, so I might as well wait...

Default New stuff

I'm looking forward to the kt400a and VT8237 southbridge with native ATA support. Maybe they'll be a RAID version, and then I'd like to throw 2 Raptors on there. With their dedicated connection to the southbridge, there's no more going through the PCI bus! That'll free up bandwidth for the GigE NIC. 768MB of RAM and a Radeon 9700 would make a tolerable BF1942 machine. Might as well throw a Barton in there, too.

Why is everyone so excited about the Raptors? They will cost about as much as a SCSI drive and have less bandwidth, and a slower spindle.

i'll just keep adding 15k RPM SCSI drives to my machine

Also a Gignic wouldnt do jack on a regular PCI bus anyway, you would get a total of 133Mb/sec and at that you would max the PCI bus out for all the other devices. You need a higher end board to actuall use Gignic speeds. like something along the lines of a PCI-X system.

That is the beauty of the hammer systems ... many chipsets (including an AMD one) incorporate PCI-X ... much fun is coming.

Well do to some other things that came up I'm in the same boat as BigBen, funding. I won't have the money now for a complete build until next fall.

And with all the changes that will be happening between now and then, I'm not making any forcasts on what will be in it. I do know it will be in a Lain Li case and be watercooled, but beyond that nothing is sure.

You've asked what we're waiting for before we upgrade... but I haven't heard a single person here say "the mailman." That's what I am waiting for (perpetually it seems... ).

I'm not waiting for anything

Theres so much that will be introduced somewhat soon as well. I don't even follow it. WHen I feel I need to upgrade, I'll see whats out & read up on the reviews.

My gaming system runs everything I need right now, although I need a new video card (probably go with a good Ti4200).

with the advent of having a water cooled system done sometime soon, im just waiting for a rad9800pro, but ill probly wait a little for prices to go down a bit. going from a voodoo5 to a ti4200 in january, pretty muched added 10 grand onto my 3d mark 2001se score, hoping to see a good 6000 or more addition to that. i might possibly add another 512mb stick into my system to utilize the dual channel ability on my board. way way way down the road, i might get a highpoint serial ata raid card and put some (relativly cheap at that time) serial ata 80gb or 120gb drives in a raid 0 or 0+1 array

i agree with beans though...so much to be introduced in the next few months.

Joe,

Think twice about the Adaptec Zero channel raid board.....had my heart set on one (Adaptec 2010s) with a pair of 15K SCSI's in raid 0......but the latest reviews show very poor performance....maybe if Adaptec gets the drivers right it might work.....some say it is a limit of the Zero Channel concept......check out the comments over at 2cpu
