Fan placement dilemma...

I just wanted to get a few tips on which way I should place a fan onto a BIX radiator...

Should I place the fan so that it's pushing air through the fins of the radiator? Or should I place the fan so that it's pulling air through the fins of the radiator?

Fans should always *pull* air through Black Ice radiators.

BTW: Is it "always" or "allways"?

I use 'allways' but I'm not 100%, it's the same with 'really'...

Fans 'seem' to work better pulling air through, they seem to make more noise which would indicate to me that more work is being done, more turbulance for example , which can only be a good thing...

For best results(according to popular concensus ) use a shroud and have the fan stand off by an inch at least to reduce the fan centres 'dead spot', for absolute bestestes* results use two fans shrouded as above in a push~pull configuration...

I say try it both ways and see what works best for you

I tried both ways and didnt see any deferents in my temps

I,m using a dual 120 mm radiator from swiftech

Some French site (Overclex.net) did an experiment on this. They found that a fan pulling was better than a fan pushing air. A fan on both sides (one pushing, one pulling... is that a Pushme-Pullme setup?) made no significant difference from just one fan pulling air through.

...BTW, is it always really allready, or already?

I simply didnt want the heated up air in my case, so I put my fan on push, and pointing out of case. I think thats the biggest factor on the placement.. where do you want that hot air going?

The air passing through the rad ain't heated much, if you've got a good airflow.
On the other hand, your cooling loop will suffer from worse rad performance, for 2 reasons:
- the rad intake is now hot air from the case
- slightly less airflow due to the fan 'pushing' through

I suggest you reverse the fan to 'sucking' cold air into the case, especially if the rad is at the bottom front.

Unless there's a terrific heatload dissapating through the rad the air coming out should be cool for cooling the case innards as well, put a thermometre in front of the airflow and measure it, I bet it's not 0.5DegC(well 1DegC to be on the safe[er] side! ) hotter than ambient room air temps...

whereas, the air in your case is much more than 1 degree higher than ambient. So, by using the radiator fan as an exhaust, you:

1. get less flow (if it's pushing through the radiator).

2. Get higher water temps.

3. Probably get higher case temps as even a low flow 120mm fan should offer significant intake of cooler air.

Another thing.. I have 2 case fans on the back of my Antech case. They were pulling air out, I moved them to blow in over the mosfets and cpu when I flipped them. The inner case temps are much lower than they have ever been. Is there a taboo against that for a reason I haven't heard of as well?
I was apparently wrong about the rad fan.. so what do you say guys?

I say . . . "If it drops your temps it's better."

Confusion: I thought the rad was being fed from out~of~case air?. Drawing outside air through the rad and into the case is what I was about . I would'nt use inside case air unless I had very good airflow moving through my case, and only then if I had to for radiator mounting ease, ect...

I have 3 fans blowing in. I would say its pretty good. Only 2-3C above ambient in case.

If you switched the rad fan to sucking air into the case through the rad, then it may be worth checking to see if using the rear fans as exhaust improves temps. But I am not aware of any "golden rule" of rear fan orientation.

2-3C above ambient is nice, but where is that being measured, and by what?

It's stupid where the manus' put the mobo/case thermistor, always (99%) at the bottom left corner of the mobo! ...

Are you drawing air into the case through the radiator winewood?, that's the impression I had...

no.. i was blowing air out of the case through my radiator which sits in the bottom front. I was reconsidering and changing it back possibly to a pull air in.

Either way, whether you have it blowing air into the case, or sucking air out of the case, the fan should generate more airflow and less noise if it is sucking air through the radiator.

I know that sentence is confusing, but I'm really tired and can't figure out how to phrase it better. I hope you can parse it, poorly worded as it is.
