Default Rant - Cable Lengths

1) Why is it so hard to find cables long enough for my full-tower case?

2) Why doesn't the measurement indicate the distance from the motherboard connector to the first connector on the damn cable?

I'm sitting here with three (round) cables that are ALL too short unless I move all my drives dfown to the lowest possible bays. I'm almost positrive that the floppy cable has no hope in hell of reaching to where the drive is (it's at the TOP of the case).

Things that make you go GRRRRRRRR...

Because the IDE spec limits the cable length to 18"?

Yet another reason why SCSI is superior

The max cable length on IDE is *not* 18 inches. I found some that are 36 inches in length.

I think the length limitation is similar to scsi, and scsi is only superior because you can access multiple drives simultaneously on a given scsi chain. I like scsi, but it costs too damn much for what you get.

18" is the spec for ATA66 and up; many mfgrs make longer ones though. A better question would be: Why do you need a floppy?

Indeed. Mine sits in my drawer, and only gets plugged in when it is needed, which is almost never. Plus, as long as you tell your BIOS that you have a floppy plugged in, even if it isn't, windows will think you have one, which allows you to hot swap the floppy drive.

Only SCSI-2 UW specification had a limitation of 1.5m (~4.5 feet)and that is with the old-school 50pin cable. Any modern SCSI-3 LVD HDD has a limitation of "only" 12m (meters) and the HVD has a maximum length of 25m.

How can that compair with IDE limitation of 18inches (~1.5 feet)???

BTW multiple drives chained on a single channel is NOT the only advantage to SCSI........ that is just one of the "perks"
