Im running a mostly closed loop, but it has a big plastic box for a reservoir. I cant just remove the res because it is important for the loop and 2 pumps are in there. The problem is that i cant seal it airtight and running on straight demineralised water for about a month now the tubing starts to feel kind of slimy. It smells too.
What can i add to the coolant that will take care of this, but wont affect cooling too much and is not very aggressive to plastic or plexitops? |

I just bought some Algae Destroyer Liquid from Walmart. It treats like 1000 gallons for $5
In the fish department. Im going to test it and maybe add a drop to my closed system.

Thats quite a nice deal.
The problem for me is that there is no Walmart over here... And i dont think the stuff you get in Fishstores is good for this because it allows the fish to live, so it cant be very strong. |

i always drop in a good deal of antifreeze liquid for cars, and some detergent. that doesn't stop weird lifeforms developing after a period of 6 months. i don't know what is strong enough to keep algae out for 1 yr.

Go to a camping store and buy yourself some raw Iodine. While I can't profess to know if that would cause corrosion or anything, it kills practically anything without any trouble. If anyone does know whether this would be a bad idea, let me know. Betadine, which a lot of people over at the HardForums use, has Iodine as its active ingredient. Since I have a bunch of Iodine crystals at home, I figured I would just use them.

That algae destroyer will coat your tubing and copper surfaces. Use hot tub sanitizer (non chlorine/non bromine), since it was specifically designed for this use. The added bonus is that it doesn't reek.

Yeah, that prolly will too, though I don't recognize the brand. Most algae destroyers do so partially by impregnating the algae (sticking to it and seeping in). You can imagine that this sticking feature is not wanted in your cooling loop.

What about Raw iodine?
I have some of that and algae destroyer but have not used either.

Check a MSDS sheet on iodine reactivity with copper. If there isn't any, then you're okay. Personally, I don't know if it does or not. I have heard that it will stain most types of tubing, so beware.

I checked the MSDS [should have thought of that myself =] and it listed it as incompatible with powdered metals, alkali metals, and strong reducing agents. Basically, it sounds like it should be fine in a watercooling setup. It probably will stain tubing though, it has a knack for turning everything brown =\
I'll test this out tonight on a short-term basis by just putting some crystals in a spare piece of tubing and leaving it there for a couple days. BO(V)BZ |

Far as I know, I just made I nice 1:5-7 mixture of Anti-Freeze+Distilled water and added a SINGLE drop of jet-Dry, and I don't have any Lime-White Coats, or Algae... But I also ran a batch of Lysol+water through my rig and drained with LOTS of Distilled, BEFORE I did the final adding of 1:5 etc... That should be fine... I haven't seen anything in my system in about 3-4 months and my water temps are pretty warm and coozy for algae... Just don't use tap water and clean out all your parts with some sort of disinfectant... Good luck.

According to the Tygon web-page (www.tygon.com, follow some links...) all formulations of Tygon tubing have Excellent resistance to Iodine. (One of the reasons I don't mind paying a bit more for Tygon lab-grade over ClearFlex/vinyl/etc. - it's resistant to a damn lot of stuff, I don't worry about coolant additives much)
I also wonder how the stuff you can get at outdoors equipment stores for making ground/stream/lake water safe to drink would work. I'll have to try and stop by MEC next time I'm downtown and see if I can see what chemicals are in that stuff. |

I put a small ammount of algae control for pools in my system. It smells similar to the waterwetter I put in. No growth yet after 1 month.

I've looked at the stuff they sell in Camping/outdoor stores before, and some of them [REI in my area] actually sell crystallized Iodine. They also sell all sorts of other purification tablets, liquids, etc, but the Iodine based one was the most interesting of the bunch. The Iodine-based purifier came with only a gram or so, but Iodine is barely soluble so that should last you a good long while anyways. I think that it was supposed to purify 200 gallons [or maybe quarts?] of water.

There's a link to what I was talking about. It says that it's good for purifying 2000 quarts, which would make raw Iodine pretty damn strong. I just dropped a couple crystals in a gallon of distilled water I'm going to use for my watercooling. They don't appear to be dissolving at all, but I expected that. The solubility of I is really low anyways. BO(V)BZ |
