Default Please evaluate this proposed setup

I am a little bit of a newbie to active cooling -- but I have already water-cooled my CPU and now am thinking about actively cooling it with peltier.

I have acess to an awesome external power supply -- so power is not a concern.

My goal is to bring an O/C'ed Athlon XP 1800 to around Zero celcius -- and hopefully get it to 1.9+ ghz stable. Here is my plan.

Use a Maze 2.2 w/ 2 x 120w (24v) pelts. According to my calculations assuming the CPU puts out about 115 watts @ 2.1 Vcore and the pelts combind for about 240w of cooling, and assuming a no load delta of 50c -- this should result in 26c of cooling. My ambient is right around 24c, so we are talking a bit under zero (my bet is that real world cooling would be right at zero - or just above).

I currently am using a Black Ice Rad (120mm Sanyo 100cfm fan), and an Eheim 1048 pump in a closed loop. These items would remain the same (all 3/8" tubing).

Questions:

Will I get my desired zero degree temps under load?

Will the Black Ice be able to remove enough heat to maintain a 0c temp w/ cpu under load? (its rated for 400w of dissipation -- I would only have 240w right??)

Will the CPU get too cold??

Is the Maze 2.2 truly capable of removeing the heat generated by the hot side??

Anything I am overlooking??

Please let me know your thoughts.

Well, basically all of your questions relate to: Is my system going to be able to perform?

Your system will work. However, I'm not sure if your wanted low temps will be achieved. I mean the temps will definitely be good, but there are definitely places that you can fix up a bit to get lower temps.

1. Go to 1/2" hose.
2. Get another radiator or a better one. While the Black Ice kicks major ass, that's a lot of heat you're talking about.

The DD block is pretty good and I don't think that would be your limiting factor. Be sure to insulate!!!

Thanks again for responding Kevin.

I was considering upgrading to a Black Ice II? Perhaps I would do so if the Black Ice could not remove all of the heat.

Does 1/2" tubing really make that big of a difference?? My pump has 3/8" ID fittings -- would I need to replace that part?? I really don't want to have to replace everything.

What kind of temps do you all think I could (should) expect? How much of a difference would the Black Ice II really make??

There are some guys in this forum who are really good w/ the technical aspect of cooling, temp calculations and stuff. They may take a couple of days to respond, but they'll do better w/ temp estimates than I can. A Black Ice 2 will give you better numbers probably. The switch from 1/2" to 3/8" can add significant flow. I'm pretty sure w/ the Eheim pumps you can just swtich out the fittings, but changing all your stuff would be annoying so don't worry bout it now. I'd grab the better radiator and go for it.

No matter what radiator you use, as long as it is in your room, don't expect your ambient temps to stay at 24C or less, your computer will be putting out heat like nothing you ever seen, I ran 2 24v@120W pelts, its very difficult to keep that water cool enough and it feels like a electric space heater blowing on you.

Good call Jim. That's why I say your radiator is your biggest limiting factor... I had a 120w + a NB pelt at like 50w. Granted, that didn't put as much heat out as Jim's setup, but the point is that you are going to need a badass radiator.... or multiple ones .

Wow that's guys. I really don't want to heat my room up.

What about just running a single 172w pelt and shooting for say a 20c load temp?

Would I still get the "heater" effect?

It is still gonna put out some heat, I had a single 156 watt on a 1.4g tbird and with the BlackIce rad and a YS Tech fan ( I thought water cooling was supposed to be quiet , LOL ) noisy, hot air blowing at me, I personally couldn't take it, now with my radiators sitting in my crawlspace and no fans needed to cool the water, I am very happy.

skrill think of the bright side.... if you live in a cold area winter is coming up and the money you spend on the power for pelts you can off set with the money you save in heating
