Umm why?? why is it that much work?

why not just AT them (schedule them) to run at different times.

all I do is click a bat file and it sets up the start up and shut down time for the folding on every machine I want. I have another bat file to push out all the folders and files, and I have a few failsafe bat files to cancel all the jobs on all the machines, and remove all traces of the folding.

That works assuming all the computers have their c: hdd shared with full acess right?

I could had about 30 P4 1.5 GHZ, if the client, without being a service, would run with no window...
Cant install as a service, its at my school, ont have privileges to do that.

this is meant for ONLY NT/2K/XP machines ( anything NT based) that always has the root of the physical drives shared as c$/d$/ etc... these are ADMIN shares which means you MUST be an admin to use them. you must be an admin to schedule onto the remote machines also

if you arent an admin on the network you prolly shouldnt be installing software all over anyway

I cannot stress enough that if you DO NOT have permission to install the client then DO NOT DO IT! I have been crunching Distributed Computing Projects for 3 years now and see people loose their jobs, get fines, fired, ect...

As everyone knows, I do the RC5 stats for CD Freaks and love helping out the team. I was even once going to install the client on the computers at my school a few years back, since they do nothing all day, but reboot constantly (Windows 98 ). Well it turns out, some one else had the same train of thought, though they were a PC specialist fixing some college computers.

David McOwen was working as a PC specialist at the state-run DeKalb Technical Institute in 1998, when he learned about a project by the non-profit organization distributed.net that allowed computer users to donate their unused processing power to test the RC5 encryption algorithm. Noticing that many of the machines he maintained on the seven DeKalb campuses sat idle for long periods, McOwen installed distributed.net clients at several of those locations while performing a Y2K upgrade on the machines in 1999.

According to McOwen, during the Christmas holidays in 1999 school administrators noticed that unused machines were sending and receiving the distributed.net data -- about the equivalent of one email a day. The school sent McOwen a letter of suspension in January of 2000, without specifying a grievance, and McOwen resigned shortly afterwards, believing that he had put the incident behind him.

Instead, in June of 2001 McOwen was contacted by an investigator from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who informed him that he was the subject of an 18-month computer crime investigation. In October, prosecutors from the Georgia state attorney general's office charged McOwen with eight violations of Georgia's tough computer crime law: one count of computer theft, and seven counts of computer trespass -- one for each of the school offices where McOwen downloaded the distributed.net client.

Each felony count carries a $50,000 fine and a 15-year possible prison term, for a 120 year maximum possible sentence. The indictment also calls for restitution equal to the amount of money paid to state workers to uninstall the programs from 500 PCs.

If you will note I had a slight issues with RC5 back in the day... you would need to search some backlogs on some other forums for info But yes doing this stuff without any kind of authority or permission is BAD news. (even though I had it back in the day with RC5 that didnt help anything)...

Also this is another reason I stress to run it ONLY off hours.. On hours is just flat out risky and could cause problems.

Methods of gaining more computers off your boss's network.

Not so legit:

Someone needs to design a service that will allow it to be completly hidden away, so only if you know where to look it'll be there and won't show the signs of doing anything, (dodgy uploads at strange times of the night, CPU usage pernamently at 100%)

So it would only work if the computer ceases activity (like the powersaving device it switches on after 20min of inactivity), and holds off sending the work done untill you log on your machine, the network using the other half of the service on as a simple .exe program
. That would request to all to be sent slowley across the network trying not to interrupt other traffic on the way to be sent out by only a single computer. This may take an hour of slow transfer but it should be masked by all the internet activity anyway, since your in, then it'll be under normal opening hours and coupe be put down to a "heavy porn habit".

If this works then nothing will be logged at weird times of the night (such as strange uploads), and people won't see their CPU stay at 100% pernamently. The only draw back I see if this works though is if they have a low quantity of RAM and they have to use the HD as a scracth disk which will create noise and show a lot of activity.

Hard work I know, and I haven't a clue how to do it, but you should get the 12hours a day full folding out of many thousands of machines for as long as you want to risk it.

Or just ask your boss and explain to him the importance of reserch angle; pointing out to him that this would be a good public image etc. etc. He doesn't need to know that he just happens to be folding for an obscure site ;P.

you never know, your boss could be amenable to the idea of contributing wasted power to research that could potentially substantially improve his quality of life by the time he retires I got my entire office except for a P3 1 ghz server running folding at home under my user name with the full support of my boss.

Yeah I gave up at amdmb. Spent what 3 days trying to get things going over there and I managed to get 1 new member to sign up. I like a motivated team with spirit and the will to kick ass. This team is definatly that at the moment!

My little farm will be down most of the weekend though if not longer. I have a LOT of re-working to do in the computer room. I need to try and get all the comps in one rack and organized. It's a mess in there now. Got the kid this weekend and going fishing tomorrow with her so I don't know how much I will get done... Next weekend I am gone to the parents to setup a new comp for them (which I built for under $400!) and drop off and setup a scanner for grandma. Should be good fun trying to get a new USB scanner to work on an old K-6 500 Chaintech board. Dug myself a hole when I built that thing.

SILENCE!!! Just shut all but my laptop down and it is next after I finish this. My god I didn't realize how loud it was in here. I shut the air coolers off first and that was a huge difference. Two 38CFM 5000RPM screamers! Then the next loudest was one with a 120mm 83CFM Panaflow that I chipped some blades off and was vibrating and loud, and then the quiet one was with the same fan but in perfect condition with my little 170GPH Little Giant and the Lemon Block Cu on the Bit KT7A with a XP1600+@1800mhz and running under 40C!

Tomorrow I go fishing for most of the day and Sunday it looks like rain so I might get a little organized and get a few fired back up. lot of stuff to do around here though.

So in other words if you want to knock me out of 3rd this next few days will be a good time. I should be back up and running Monday. I will also have another cruncher from Tuesday untill next Saturday morning as that is the one I am building for my mom. That will be a nice setup to. In fact it might be faster than my fastest one now.... I just don't want to have to mess with it for a few years.

I see joe has things well in hand for the weekend!
