Default Ohmigod we're all going to DIE!!!

Just to cheer you all up this morning, many geologists are concerned by a sudden spike of activity at Yellowstone national park. For those of you that don't know, yellowstone park is almost entirely composed of one massive VOLCANO CRATER. Well, it looks like we may be in for another blast. The last blast of this magnitude was around 78000 years ago and almost caused mankind to go extinct, dropping northern hemisphere temperatures almost 21C in the summer. If Yellowstone goes off (which some believe will happen in the next 3-70 years from monitoring it), everything within 3-600 Km of that park will be annihilated. The next 600 Km would be buried under massive layers of ash. Heavy ash would fall as far away as the appalachians and the gulf of mexico. Rocks would fall across the plains. This is bad shit. Imagine a 50 Km vertical column of lava spitting from the rocky mountains ... just thought I'd cheer you up. And for you Euros among us, prepare to freeze your asses off in the next ice age ... I'll be a fossil, so I won't be able to share your pain.

Is it true that the next eruption of Yellowstone is overdue?

No. The fact that two eruptive intervals (2.1 million to 1.3 million and 1.3 million to 640,000 years ago) are of similar length does not mean that the next eruption will necessarily occur after another similar interval. The physical mechanisms may have changed with time. Furthermore, any inferences based on these two intervals would take into account too few data to be statistically meaningful. To say that an eruption that might happen in ten's or hundred's of thousand's of years is "overdue" would be a gross overstatement. On the other hand we cannot discount the possibility of such an event occurring some time in the future, given Yellowstone's volcanic history and the continued presence of magma beneath the Yellowstone caldera.

If our government says there is a small chance that we might be safe, then who are we to doubt them??

The downside is that there probably won't be any electricity in the US. Yay for us...

It is a good thing terrorists are not up on this kind of science. Seems to me a well placed high power bomb could set that thing off. From one of those links it looks like a big zit waiting to be popped. They could take out large portion of the USA and then some! Hummm, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it...

high power bomb would have to be on the level of a nuke, if its even possible at all. Not anything you need to worry about.

I wounldn't worry about all that crap according to the scientists we are overdue for:

- An Ice age
- A Super Volcanic explosion (Yellowstone)
- A extinction metor
- The second coming
- Elvis

So I won't worry .

I actually read the links just now...

the thing to remember here is we're talking a geologic timescale; 10,000 years is for many things completely insignificant.

By the time this thing erupts thwarting its damage will be trivial; just look at where we were a century ago, and that one century is completely meaningless on a geologic scale.

Meaningless except for all those pesky nuclear tests and the fun damage they did/might have done do the planet.
