OK I have a 17" CRT that finally went on me - I'm pretty sure something is loose inside as it was moved around a lot previously and only by wiggling the signal wire was I able to draw out its life another week.
A bust cable I have ruled out but in case I don't find out the cause of the "injury" I have pretty much got a bust CRT monitor on my hands. Does anyone know of anything worth nabbing on the inside, that could be useful elsewhere? Maybe there is a tiny TEC in amoungst the dust I doubt it but is there some gem of hardware worth nabbing of it? ~ Boli

Well, there's a 10 kV transformer and rectifier system (read: DC power supply) in there, that could be worth nabbing

Boli if you do not know what you are doing with CRT then stay out. Knight is right the charge can stay for a very long time and if you were to do something like cutting the flyback back wire with out discharging it – ZAP your gone. It's pretty safe to say that there is no small TEC inside.

Hmmm the AC-DC converter could be useful in nabbing.
And don't worry I am VERY careful with monitors I'm treating it as a PSU, don't touch anything - don't cut anything - don't bridge connections. I'll look into finding a way to discharge it first. And I know what wire you are talking about - it is the only doubly insulated wire in the case. ~ Boli

You will also find that in most monitors everything is usually on one circuit board – so its all or nothing in most cases.

Well there are two circuits - the "power circuit" where it has the bits I would like on, and the "emission circuit" at the back of the tube that controlls the "rays".
Thanks for the help guys - was basically wondering if I woud loose anything I might want if i just threw it out without checking. ~ Boli

that coil would be fun to play with, but not generally something i'd **** with.
the best thing to do with it? smash it to bits. great stress relief in obliterating electronic gear.
