Default hose clamps

Hi All,

When do you need hose clamps, and how tight must they be?

I'm using currently these

scroll down to "Nylon Slangklem".

No problems with my 2x L20, but what if I move to a "real" pump like Jabsco 59500-0012 /Johnson CM10P7-1.?

Will that give problems?

There's only two things you need to remember, when it comes to clamps:

1-the diameter should fit the tubing's ID. If the barb is smaller than the tube's ID (i.e. 3/8" barb with 1/2" ID tubing), you will surely develop a leak, either now or later.

2-Use a clamp, any clamp. It really doesn't matter which clamp you use, as long as it's also of the right size. The purpose of a clamp here, is to prevent a hose from coming off, if you accidentally pull on it, or if you have a setup that's really "tight". The pumping pressures are nowhere near high enough to cause a hose to come off, even if you had a Johnson CM30xxx.

OK, thanks for the input.

I have a asetec reservoir, and when I was filling my system, the top blew right of.... I used some tape so it won't come of.

I never use smaller fittings then barbs. Inless I need to connect to 8mm. The I take a 13mm tygon hose, place a pice of 10mm tygon in there, and my opening is then about 6mm. (still have a Asetec rad, who uses 8mm........)

The rule of thumb that I tend to use for clamp tension when I'm using stainless worm drive clamps is to snug them down until either the hose material just starts to stick through the 'gear slots' in the band, or until the top surface of the band feels about even with the OD of the hose. This is when using pretty thick hose, if it is real thin stuff I'll just go until it 'feels tight'

I also have used 'Tie Wraps' or 'Zip Ties' as hose clamps, they work pretty good, and look neater than the stainless worm clamps. My rule for them is to pull them as tight as I can, definitely enough to make them sink into the hose a bit.

I will also second the earlier comment about not using a hose larger than the barb. However it MAY be OK to use a barb one or two steps larger than the hose, depending on what sort of hose it is (Some types are OK, some tend to split). Even on these connections you should still use a clamp, but you don't need quite as much tension on it.
