Does anyone know where I can but some RAMsinks for my sapphire ATI Radeon 9800pro in the UK? Which ones are best? Is the best way to attach it with an arctic silver 5 and arctic silver thermal epoxy mix? Any help would be appriciated

As your system is now water cooled, I'd suggest cutting up a old heat sink to the proper size with a dremel or hack saw. No expense and will serve as well, or better, than any being sold.

Tweakmonster ramsinks come in bga or regular sizes. Some heatsinks come with doublesided tape and some don't. I think that it is generally better to use a good adhesive such as arctic alumina or silver, but you have to be very careful when applying this stuff. I got some on the ram and it artifacted out. Luckily, it wasn't completely dry yet and I was able to clean it off with alcohol. When they say thin coat, they mean thin coat!!
I don't know where to get it in UK. Do a search on a search engine. |

I do mate - check out http://www.coolercases.co.uk. I'm getting the OCZ BGA Copper Heatsinks, though the Zalman looking ones look pretty cool. Maybe if I can get a review between them then I'll change - only £3 more.
I'mm gonna attach them with Arctic Alumina.

Not sure if they are sold in the UK, but Dynatron makes a skived fin copper CPU cooler that Newegg is selling for $8 US.
Cut up it would out perform the Tweakmonsters or OCZ sinks. The taller fined copper CPU cooler would offer more surface area. And at much lower cost. |

Yeah, it is nice and probably works very well, but man, it looks hard to cut up and still look nice.

Depends on what tools you have. With a vise + thin bladed fine toothed hack saw, no problem. Then just a bit of base touch up with some fine automotive wet sand paper.
If you have a good steady hand, a dremel will do for cutting it up. |

http://www.svc.com/oczflmira.html Out performs and is only NOW cheaper than the tweakmonster bga ramsinks, however watch out there is enough space on your vid card... ![]() 27x9x27mm Oh btw I suggest removing the tape and use a thermal adhesent instead since thermal tape is horrible. http://www.svc.com/oczflmira.html Last edited by Ewout_vB; 01-12-2004 at 02:09 PM. That's fine, but before spending your money, do a search for, "BGA heatsinks" at SVC. They have a number of other sinks for BGA ram, that will fit better than those suggested by Ewout_v8. The ones he posted a link to are more for the mosfets, voltage regulators and old style rectanguler memory chips, they aren't wide enough for BGA memory. If I were to spend money on factory made ones, this is what I"d buy. www.svc.com/cobgarachhe.html These are also OCZ, but made for BGA memory chips. Also a bit lower cost than Tweakmonster's chrome sinks, and offer more surface area than the Tweakmonsters as well. |

Can't get better sized than that... I posted the height and width because as you can see it's a bit big above the base of the heatsink... You could buy cheaper ones but if you don't mind spending 10 bucks on some extra performance of your videocard this would be something you COULD invest on. Although it doesn't do too much. |

27mm X 9mm X 27mm, D X W X H
They are narrow my friend for BGA chips, and also overly long the other way. You may note that the ones I posted are for BGA memory. To bad they aren't taller. ![]() Not sure just how high the fins need to be to get max result, but in the absense of hard numbers, taller's better. ![]() |

BGA as said before... look What I'm talking about What you are talking about, according to OCZ both of these should be able to fit on BGA ramsinks SUCH AS the mem on the 9800 pro, which i believe is definately BGA sized. Although I see your point how these should fit better, the OCZ did say it not only on the website... However I never saw the 'perfect quote' statement ![]() ![]() |

So was the conclusion the the vertical finned heatsinks were better than the Zalman Flower type heatsinks? Thanks!

NO ! The tall ones are listed for video ram, but they are listed for use on SDRAM video chips (longer, but narrower), not the BGA ones which are more square. While they could be used they will not cover the full width of the BGA chips, and they'll overhang on the ends the other way, which might require that they be cut down to not contact other board components. The shorter, but properly sized copper sinks (OCZ) are about the best bang for the buck you'll find. And they are sized just for BGA memory chips. Like I posted earlier, I wish they were taller, but that's why I also suggested cutting up a CPU heatsink, the fins on CPU sinks are much taller. But for the differance in costs, (if you don't have a old sink to cut up), those OCZ sinks are nice as they require no cutting & fitting. |
