Snap Server 2200 keeps crashing (log included)
Hi folks,
I have a snap Server 2200 that keeps on crashing. When I turn it on, it keeps going into 'Dick checking mode' and then crashes. When I first turn it on, I can connect to it via Web utility, where I can check status/options, but can't gain access to the hard disk Then the 'System' LED gives 2 flashes at a time Then the 'System' LED flahes rapidly and the 'Link' LED stays on constant. I know I have a serious issue here. The Snap Server is not important, I just want to get the information off the hard drive. The HDD's are mirrored at least. My question is: 1) Can I recover teh Snap Server? (Log below) 2) Can I remove the hard drives and connect it to my Windows XP computer as a slave drive, to extract the data? Thanks so much for any help you can provide. Log below and have also attached a .doc as below is quite messy. Re: Snap Server 2200 keeps crashing (log included)
It's reporting a failed HD 10010. Drop the power to that drive and see if it boots.
DO NOT PUT THEM IN YOUR XP MACHINE UNLESS YOU WANT TO DESTROY EVERYTHING ON THE HD'S. Snap uses a very special file system and can not be read except by another SnapOS system, or recovery service. Read the FAQ's it will help you through your problem.

Re: Snap Server 2200 keeps crashing (log included)
Hi,
Thanks a lot for the quick reply. I had read somewhere that you couldn't put the HD's in a Windows Machine, so I didn't do that obviously, however thought i'd ask incase there was a way around it. You are right, there appears to be a failed drive. I removed the IDE cable from the top hard drive (as you look at the server from the front, on the left) and it's not crashing anymore. Lookign at logs it must do 'repairs' to the current drive - I have no choice but to let it to this as the drive is current offline. Fingers crossed there is no data loss here. I will keep the thread updated in the hope it may be of use for future reference |

Re: Snap Server 2200 keeps crashing (log included)
CRISIS AVERTED!
As advised above, I un-plugged the hard-drive, the system did its repair to the other drive and I am now pulling data off the good drive (to ensure no loss) I don't trust this Snap Server 2200 for some reason! It's quite old now (2005 I think) and I want to replace it. Can anyone offer any decent alternative SAN with a similar set-up to the Snap Server 2200? i.e. 2 hard disks, RAID 1 which will mirror OR, am I being silly and should I just replace the hard-disk in the Snap Server 2200 and continue as normal? Thanks again for teh advise, great forum! |

Re: Snap Server 2200 keeps crashing (log included)
You can always install newer HD's and replace the fan every 3-5yrs like I do on mine. One thing that cause problems is power cycling the units all the time. These units are design to run 24/7, power cycling takes a hit on the power supply and system. But if you move to a newer OS (>XP) you may be forced to anyway. My 2200 has only been turned off once in 3 yrs. And that was due to an extended power outage, transformer blew up at the switch yard. My APC SmartUPS 1500va powered all my hardware down when the battery life was at 2 min left. Then powered most every thing backup when power was restored.

Re: Snap Server 2200 keeps crashing (log included)
Thanks for the advice. I will keep that in mind.
If I was to buy a direct replacment Mirror HD (I didn't even take the dud HD out of the case yet to check what it is), is it just a matter of popping the new one in? Or is there much config? |

Re: Snap Server 2200 keeps crashing (log included)
I try to match the current drive mfg & model if you can. If not a larger capacity HD will be cut down to match the Master position. So if you use a larger HD make sure it's in the slave position.
The FAQ's have the procedure, link in my sig.

Re: Snap Server 2200 keeps crashing (log included)
Hi folks,
My friend (who owns the server) reckons he wants a new system altogether... he just doesn't trust the current snap server (his own choice, i'm not gonna tell him otherwise) I know i'm kinda going off topic on my own thread, but are there any other good, reliable back-up servers, with a similar set-up to the Snap 2200 (Raid 1, mirrored drive). Price isin't really an issue for a proper, reliable system. Thanks |
