Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
I bought a Snap Server 2000 but it came with the harddrives removed. Can someone please help me out as to how to add harddrives to this and get it up and going. The serial number is 56534 and the part number is 70700124-003. There is another part number on the bottom of the unit it is p/n 5325301372. Any suggestions on the size and brand of harddrives will be greatly helpful.
Thanks |

Re: Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
Simple, Open the case buy removing the screw in back by the fan. The case will then split. Depending on model (v1 or V2) install the HD as M/S for v1 or CS or M/S for v2.
Depending on how the Network was setup you may need to reset if not DHCP. May need to use Assist to locate and do the initial setup. Read the FAQ's it will answer most of your questions.

Re: Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
Cool, Thanks for the response. So I do not have to install the OS or anything? that sounds simple enough. How would I know what version I have? ALso what harddrive size do you recommend. Also, can I install just one large HD instead of 2? the reason why I ask is that I already have a 200Gig drive sitting around.
Thanks again Last edited by seti007; 12-22-2007 at 11:31 AM. |

Re: Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
A v2 will have dimms for memory, your sn is high enough to be a v2. You need SnapOS v3.4.805 or > for large disk support. Click on the SnapAppliance Logo from the admin page will give you vitals. No HD's are required to boot from firmware. Locate the IP and connect.
In order to have redundency you need 2 drives in Raid1. But you can use only one HD if you like. For raid performance it recomended that you have 2 identical drives including firmware, prefered WD RE drives. These older models were not designed for the large cap drives out there today. The main problem will be heat. I would recommend replacing the cooling fan to a higher cfm to counter the added heat load.

Re: Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
You are only at v3.1.603, does not support HD >137gig.
Your server is old enough they (Adaptec) may not give it to you. Another user said he found it on isohunt. You would have to hunt your self. Adaptec's tech support has been giving it out on email request. But it seams only to 2200 users. Then a user contacted sales and that provided a link for v4 free. If you find v4.0.860 it has the least problems. But I would go up in steps if you could, using v3.4.xxx. But it's not necessary. You will require at least 1 HD in it to do the upgrade.

Re: Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
Thanks blue, I was able to find 3.4.805 but for the life of me, I can find any guides on how to upgrade the OS. I also looked around for 4.0.860 but no luck. Is there any other version I can try looking for? I was able to connect a very old 4.5 gig drive and see it as share1 so I will use that for the upgrade. I will probably get a 500Gig drive later and install that.
Thanks |

Re: Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
You need to use Assist to apply the update. The OS Upgrade was added to the Server Settings menu in 3.2 I think, take a look.

Re: Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
Nevermind, I found where to get the snapassist. I had to register the damn thing with adaptec to get it. Now Im at 3.4.805. Is it worth it to go to 4.0.X?

Re: Newbie Needs help with Snap Server 2000
Yes, but for what Adaptec's want for. It's not worth it ($225) since they have marked all SnapOS as EOL. Contact sales and see if they will give it to you. There policy is sell you a service contract for software support. Just ask them " Why would I buy a service contract on a EOL Product that you no longer support." see what happends. Nothing to loose, a lot to gain.
