Is mounting a chipset WB without mobo mounting holes safe?

I'm looking at the Epox EP-8KDA3J but there does not appear to be any chipset mounting holes for a waterblock (thinking about the Swiftech MCW20). It appears that the only way to attach a waterblock would be thermal tape. Is this safe, especially for a waterblock that's as massive as the Swiftech?

Thermal Epoxy.. if you want to be able to take it off later, add a little regular thermal compound into the mix.

Yeah, just make sure the board works BEFORE you put the block on. Seen to many people over the years take a new mobo or vid card out of the box and epoxy on a bunch of shit just to find the mobo or vid card DOA and they just lost their warranty and RMA options.

Would there be residue left over on the epoxy/compound mix after the waterblock is removed?

you have the loops right? if so, you can bend one end of the screws and make j-hooks out of them so it tightens down on the loop. That probably makes no sense, if you need more clarification i could try to illustrate it somehow.

I guess he was thinking of intelbased mobo's, they have hooks beside the chipset

I guess is to try the mobo first and then use thermalpaste surrounded with a small path of 1 second glue
works like a charm and is very solid and removable

Eh, I think I'm just going to go with the Shuttle AN51R or the MSI K8N Neo. Does anyone know if the Swiftech MCW20 will fit these boards with a 6800GT graphics card? The MSI's chipset positioning looks way too close to the AGP for comfort.

I would go for the MSI, friend on mine has it and it is a really good board

Possible solution to your problem (if you dont mind making simple metal or plastic things).

You would have to put some kind of support structure on the back of the chipset though for saftey.

I'm worried about things that jut downward from the AGP card, like capacitors, ramsinks, and such that could come in contact with the waterblock.

Normally there should be more than enough clearance for that, even with a huge waterblock
