Well I found out that in order to get more than 1 amp out of the 12V line at 12V on my AT PS, I need a load on the 5V line.
So, what should I use as a dummy load (Need about 4-6 amps at 5V)? I currently grabbed all the 12V lights I could find and hooked them to 5V - that only got me about 3.5 amps, and not very practical. But I did get 7 amps out at about 11.9V that way. Any ideas? Hopefully any cheap and/or creative ones? |

Now that I think about it, do some vehicles use a 6V power source (like motorcycles?)?
Anyway, I'll look for some high power 6V bulbs today. I was already thinking of using a resistance load - but that doesn't do anything else useful. Any other ideas? |

Well I picked up some 25W 1 ohm resistors today - they burn off plenty of power - especially if I use two of them in parallel. But they get damn hot! Duh! They come in a ceramic package - wonder why (scarcastically). I wonder if oven elements are made out similar materials.
In order to keep the temps on those tolerable (so I don't burn myself), I strapped two onto a celeron slot one heatsink I had laying around, and added a fan. But where should I put this heat producing package now? I was thinking inside the P/S, but it's just a bit too big. But I know 50W of lights would be hot as well. Oh well. |

Well I did see that RadioShack has 8V Max TECs in theinr newest catalog (special order), but are rather expensive. I suppose these will work at 5V and do a decent cooling job, but where can I get some more cheaply?

You can proably get low voltage TECs cheap from some surplus site.

I tried 2 hard drives on a 300 watt AT power supply. The 122 Watt pelt does not get enough juice to perform better than without the pelt. Take a look at this power supply: http://www.mpja.com/product.asp?product=12611+PS
