Default Initializing new disks for a Snap 1000

We recently had a Snap 1000 lose its drive to unexpected failure. We finally got a new drive initialized with the proper boot files and formatting through a contact on this list.

We have several Snap 1000's working for us. Our immediate thought on getting the Snap working again was how could we image new drives using our newly initialized working drive as the source.

The original drive that failed was 13 GB and our new drive was 40 GB.

We tried using Digital Dolly but couldn't get it work properly. We found another freeware utility, HDClone 3.2 by Miray Software. The freeware version will only copy a drive to another larger drive, and both drives must be on the internal IDE bus. The software creates a bootable CD and gives a simple GUI that allows the user to choose source and destination.

The copy is a block-level copy so it picks up all partitioning and data on the drive.

In our case, the end result was an 80 GB drive formatted for 40 GB. We used the debug window in the Snap administration pages to issue the following command: "co de format 10000 /reinit".

That reinitialized the drive and there was our 80 gigs available, actually 76 gigs total.

Moving forward, we plan to archive our 40 GB drive and use it to initialize all our new Snap drives when necessary.
