Am I the only one who's bothered by the fact that these pelts eat energy? 220 watt pelts... 4 x 172 watts... Jesus. I'm not a tree hugger, I'm just wondering how much your electric bills are!? Do you run them 24/7? It wouldn't surprise me if some of you all's systems consume in excess of a kilowatt an hour. 24/7, that would cost over $80 a month where I live.

a 172w pelt consumes 288w, and a 220w consumes 350w

um.... hmmm. Sorry for the noobage, but... why? If you buy a 2000 watt hair dryer, does it consume more than 2000 watts?
Does it really consume 3000 in order to put out a true 2000 watts of heat, for an efficiency of 66%? Or am I talking apples and oranges... When you say 172w pelt, what do you mean?

a 172w pelt will cool 172w, and consume 288w. A 226w pelt will cool 226w and consume 350w.
i have no idea about hair driers, it isn't my feild of interest ![]()

I only ever use Peltiers for experimental purposes. I wouldn't even dream of trying to run them as standard on my computer. I wouldn't be able to afford the bill, and I do not like wasting power inneficiently, both on principle and because it causes environmental damage.

yeah they aren't very efficient at all. they do get more efficient at lower voltages though

ya, I think the longest period of time I've had a pelt in my system is like a week or so.

Well let see now... if a Pelt can run in reverse, you could power your Pelt from another one that you heat up with a small woodfire... HA!

That is actually possible, but they are very inneficient as generators, so you would need a huge array of Peltiers and massive fire.

I wasn't too kean on the whole Pelt idea myself, until I came accross this:
http://www.dansdata.com/pelt.htm and this: http://www.swiftnets.com/socketsealing.htm There's also some people who've elected to use a variable supply with their Pelt, because when you think about it, what's the point of cooling down your CPU below the max temp that your CPU reaches when it's at full load? Makes a lot of (green) sense to me! |
