Default CPU Stepping inquiry for new CPU

Hey gang, last night I attempted to unlock my XP 1800+ to OC without using just fsb adjustments, and I killed the CPU. The dielectric grease ever so slightly touched another set of joined L1 bridge pins. I should have been more careful...

Anyway, I am in need of another CPU, and I was wondering which AMD CPU and stepping to look for without paying the "latest CPU price". I was thinking of trying to find an AGOIA stepping CPU, but I'm not sure if its available in the non XP2000+ price range (significantly higher priced than XP1800 and XP1900).

To make a long story short, I'd like to find a CPU that can reach ~ 2000 mhz if I can. I'm not sure if another 1800+ with AGKGA is the best bet, or if I should look for an AGOIA or something else.

Thanks gang

I know a good dozen that have reached the 1900Mhz to 2050Mhz range with XP1600s that were AGOIA 0204 or newer cores. Heck, Chainbolt reached 1921Mhz with an AGOIA 0206 XP1600 on air cooling with an unlocked chip. The lowest I've seen good OCers get any of the AGOIA cores is upper 1800s. You need a board that you can get in the 2V to 2.2V Vcore range with though

FYI - did you try cleaning off your current processor to see if she was really dead??

yeah you might want to check for sure if it's dead.

otherwise, agoia seems to be the new uber stepping

Well, I did try and clean if off with rubbing alcohol after it failed to boot. It didnt do any good. I am beginning to wonder though...

I installed it without putting on a heat sink thinking it was impossible for it to fry because I'm not subjecting it to any load. I just wanted to see it post. Well, after I saw it wouldn't post, I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol as well as I could, but it still wouldn't post. I never changed any switches at all yet. My PC speaker was making a fast clicking sound briefly when I tried it again. I never saw smoke come off it though.

Now, the most disturbing part about this was that I tried a new XP 1900+ in my system and it didn't post either !! It was an OEM chip I got last night. My mobo was set to autodetect the CPU, and the FSB switch was set to 133. It just didnt post

Well, I wanted to be absolutely positive about whether or not mobo was dead, so I sneaked into my wife's machine and borrowed her T-bird 1100 and dropped it in my system. Before I did it, I did the ol pencil trick and bridged the L1 for the hell of it. The machine posted ! Thank god and all his followers! So, I proceeded to experiment with some OC'ing of it. I got it to 1430, but it wouldn't boot windows, so I dropped it back to 1313 and left it in there. My wife still doesnt know that I borrowed her CPU. She doesn't use it often enough to notice.

Well, I'm wondering if I was unlucky enough to have killed the first CPU, and received a DOA new cpu (well, it was supposed to be new). I never tried to unlock it (luckily) before I tried to fire it up. I'm beginning to wonder if the first one died though.... I got pissed and abused it after it croaked on me (or appeared to). I punched it and dropped it on the floor a few times, slid it back and forth on my desk at work and practiced some unlocking techniques on it. I think if it didnt really die before, it's dead now

Well, I'm going to head back the store I got the new one at and I am going to make them show me that the thing posts before I take it or another one back home for torture.

I'm almost afraid to try another XP CPU because killing them can be expensive.

Thanks for the replies gang

hmm are you sure it's dead? (as a keychain it's ideal)

maybe try rma'ing the 1900+ and seeing what happens with the new one

It was obvious that I attempted to unlock it. I can't get them to take it back. There is a spot that wont come off it with alcohol and the pits have krazy glue in them, so I think they would most likely laugh if I tried to get a replacement.

I wound up getting another 1800+ and decided that I didnt want to risk messing it up and paying for another one if I screwed up. I can't stomach another failed attempt just yet If I kill another CPU, my wife will kill me. I guess I'll make another attempt later on.
