Default Look at this picture of how the rad is mounted........

I have been asking this question if mounting a radiator like this would degrade performance. Here is a picture froma review where this guy has a radiator mounted in the same way I would like to mount mine. Here it is http://www.blargoc.co.uk/reviews/dan...e2/page2.shtml

The reason I am asking is that I have an Inwin Q500. And because of the way the case is mounting a heater core in the top like that would be so easy. But mounting the way this guy did his I believe would be more effective cause if I mounted it towards the back, another place that has ample room, I fear it would pull back in the warm air from the power supply. I realize that I would have to bleed it first with the rad upright to remove air but after that will it work well mounted like that in the picture?

Two problems I see. One is that with the rad. at the top of the system, any air is going to collect there.

Two is that if his air flow is blowing out, he is taking warm air from inside the case and using that to cool the rad., not good. If he is blowing air from outside in, he is blowing all that warmer air into the case, not good.

The solution is a ducting system.

Better place would be low front (if you got room).

Air will collect there, but if you run the rad down the bottom of the case for a week or two, I'm sure you won't have too many air bubbles left in the system at all.

Brad , no air left in system after 10mins .
Flow rate was so high, it forced it though.

hehe, just being ultra conservative, depending on each person's setup. Mine takes about 25 seconds to get rid of all the air

Personally, I don't like any blow-hole type setup: I just can't stand the thought of someone accidentally knocking a cup of coffee or Coke right into my computer, but hey, that's just me.

The other problem though, and a very real one, as everyone else will testify, is that the rad is at the hign point of the system, making the installation of an air trap an out-of-case solution.

I'd rather have my computer look like a computer, instead of a Christmas tree!

eh, the air-trap can go anywhere. as long as the air bubbles are small, the flow will carry them into the air-trap, no matter where it is. if i was going to mount the rad @ the top of the case, id rotate it around just to make sure no air was in it. (lol, actually, id rotate all the components to make sure there was no air in them, and let the air-trap catch anything i missed)

lol, it dosent matter! and thats not even a great air-trap. methinks a new article is in order...maybe some-1 can go thru various configs and see what kind of effect it has on air getting trapped in various components. remember, there are other highpoints in the system, which include top of the rad and WB.

wwhile we are on this topic, i wonder...when you fill the system for the first time, will there be a huge bubble of air trapped @ the top of the WB, or will it flood compleatly with water? hmm....

This fellow has a setup with the heater core on the roof. He helped me early on with my water cool.

Go here to see Rob's Rig.

Haddy, when I read the article, that pic confused me on why the author crossed this setup compared to the one below. Then I finally realized the input and output of the air-trap were right next to each other, which he just said is a no-no. So having the air-trap at the top is fine as long you give enough room (time) for the bubbles to actually go up instead of forcing it through the intake, which would destroy the purpose of the air-trap, aka don't have a direct path from the intake to outake :-).

Read that. I too have the Q500, and I've explained some cooling options in that thread.
