Default Does Aluminim provide EMI shielding?

Title says it all. i got rid of my eheim, and am going for a cheaper smaller pump. i am running P4, so pump dying is not too much of an inconvenience. but i am worried about EMI. i am putting it in an aluminum res, the one from dtek. was wondering if this will sheild the EMI, as i am putting it on top of my case, about 1' from my monitor.

No, Aluminium does not shield EMI, but copper will!

you could put metal plates around the reservoir

ok, once and for all, what kind of metal will prevent it? i hear copper. what else? steel? something cheap that i can put in on the side of the monitor, if needed.

How about a copper mesh? (That's what they use at embassies).

whatever you use, make sure it's grounded.

NO copper will NOT, reduce any magnetic field you might have a problem with.
Please read these threads on the subject:

http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/sho...?threadid=2632

http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/sho...p?threadid=632

Or take the crash course presented here:
Iron or nickel will reduce your magnetic field.
All other metals are close to worthless in this aspect.
(there exists some special alloys of course but they are not for the average watercooler).

You may be right, but it depends on the frequency of the signal you're trying to block.

In this case, a 60 Hz signal (now that I think about it!), so no, I don't believe that copper would be very effective.

A steel enclosure would probably work, as long as it's wrapped tight.

So now, what's so special about the Eheim? Does anyone know how they're shielded? Is it just the design of the coils?

My Eheim seems to be causing some problems but only on bootup which seems really strange.

what is the radiation that your processor emits? (the stuff that is unhealthy)

i just wanna know if my copper water block is stopping it, or should i not put that window in my case =)

That would be normal.

Most electric motors require a larger current than in normal operation, just to get started (i.e. break the inertia).

there would also be cobalt. With iron and nickel, they are the only 3 base metals that will magnetise and also block emi.
there would be also some rare earth metal, but the cost will completly prohibit it.
copper mesh or steel mesh around the pump should solve the problem.

Ah ben, de la visite!

I thought copper mesh would do, but it is mostly used to block high frequencies, not low frequencies, like the 60 Hz from da wall...

Steel, nickel or cobalt (not cobalt of course!). Nickel is too expensive, so a steel box will do.

Well nuclear
You are correct about Cobalt. But building a simple shield for a pump at home hardly requires such a exclusive material when normal iron/steel does the job just as good/well.

And NO. Copper does not perform well when i comes to shielding low freqency magnetic interferance.
If you don't believe me just take a look in a handbook for engineering and notice the difference between ferromagnetic materials (Iron,Nicel,Cobalt) and nomal metals like ALU,Copper, etc.
The number to look for is called:
RELATIVE PERMEABILITY
The higher the better. Vaccum or air has the relative permeability=1.
And ferrous materials have a much higher number.
If i don't remember incorrectly coppers permeability is very close to 1 and therefore worthless as magnetic insulator.

Cobalt has this nasty chemical property in that it is RADIOACTIVE!!!
