Default marineland penguin 1140 powerhead pump

i've been looking at this pump and it's siblings the penguin 550 and 660. i was wondering if anyone had any experience with these pumps and more importantly, can they be run inline without modification? how about minor modification?

How would you set that up in your system if you did get it?

minijets meant to be run inline? I thought they we're submersible too... I know the maxijet I have here from my brother's old aquarium days is submersible(and would take effort to seal), and weren't mini and maxi basically the same pump? even made by the same company?

"The Penguin 1140 Power Head delivers 300 gph of constant flow with fully adjustable aeration and increased surface agitation...and they remain silent at all times. The custom air valve regulates air flow, the air filter eliminates noise and dust, and the intake strainer keeps debris from fouling the impeller...that's efficiency."

sounds like an air pump to me

But air pumps arent rated in gph. Ive seen these pumps at petsmart (firsthand). You would never be able to use one for watercooling without serious moddin.

In a way they are air pumps. You have an option of taking a small hose and hooking it up to a hose and letting it hang outside of your tank. I should know I have 2 in my tank.

Anyways they are still water pumps. You don't have to hook up the air hose at all. Just run them without it.

The maxi-jet pumps can be run inline. I have one running in my comp right now. You just have to figure out how to get your tubing over the non-standard inlet and outlets. The mini-jet pumps IIRC are submersable only, tho.

I just got one yesterday and it works both ways... .You must seal the bottom housing otherwise it won't work inline.

Overall this thing blasts water like there's no tommarrow plus it's 1/2 as loud as the 1048 plus it runs very cool.
