I'm in the same boat with fan selection. My take is a high flow Panaflo that can be dialed down with a rheo to achieve that perfect noise/performance ratio.
But I've already got an L1A 69 CFM so I'll probably try that first in a pull config with stand-offs. Thicker 38 or 32mm fans like the Panaflos will generally perform better on a high resistance load like a radiator, than a 25mm. If I could find a matching Delta WFB1212H (25mm) I'd run two in push/pull with a rheo, but haven't seen any for sale recently. |

The BIX manufacturer asserts that a 100 CFM fan will get the best out of the rad, but even a Panaflo Low volume will do nicely... A thicker fan will give you more flow at less noise, so 38mm is the one to go for. Panaflo fans are the daddy. Put a one inch shroud between fan and BIX for best performance, if possible.

It seems to me like the best way to go, is to get the 120mm fan that provides the most flow, then add the mod to quiet it down. Otherwise what's the point of quieting a low flow fan, or at the other end, how are you going to get more cfm from an ultra quiet unit?
I say: stay in control! Now of course to be more accurate, i'd have to draw a chart of noise/cfm, and pick the one with the lowest ratio, that's still in a high flow rate. BTW, Delta now makes a triple bladed fan, but I have no idea where to get one. Check them out at www.deltaww.com |

The BIX has some space built in, so some 1/2 or 3/4" nylon spacers between the fan and rad on the screws will provide the extra plenum volume, wrap black cardboard (like gift-box thickness) around the gap, glue the over-lapping end with heat glue and you're set.

guys i dont know if this would help or not but if you look at my old site
http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/perl/709/ you well see i have been using 120volt 120mm fans.these babys will run at 115cfm and unlike a 12volt fan they seen more responsive.and all you do is go to your local home store and buy a wall mounted dimmer switch like i did.i can vary my speed and noise from wide open to the fan blades barley turning, they work great in my stuff because i have allready got water pumps and other 120volt stuff running.just a idea been working great for me for years. o yea you guys know how even the big 120 12fans seen to lug if you get them sucking hard behind a raditor.well these 120volt babys seem like they are just in the open they dont even get strained under load if any one wants i can help them find the links to lots of 120volt fans

I did the exact same thing to a fan (not for cooling a PC, but myself

@ Jetjaguar,
Paul Vodrazka (the guy who makes those seriously sexy Phaze II waterblocks) came up with the idea for a plexi and aluminium BIX shroud that doubles as a reservoir... We are bouncing some designs around. if we can get it to work, it would look eyewateringly cool! ![]()
