Seems like a smart move for Via considering how low AMD stock is trading for these days...

You just want Via to buy AMD so you can get a AMD chip that will run cool without active cooling in a ITX fomat mobo...

it sure looks like something has to happen. i look at it this way, when amd holds the performance crown, they can make a little money. if they don't , like now, they lose money on every processor they sell. i don't thk hammer or barton is likely to change that.
i read today however that dell might consider using opteron's, good news after HP also deciding to start using amd. i think the big oems need to start realising that by boycotting amd , they will start to get vulnerable to intel pricing monopolies. that is o'course if amd throws in the towel. then who will buy a dell, if they have to pay at least 300-500$ per mediocre processor. top of the line will prolly cost near 1000$. but to return to the Q, is via really in the shape to do anything that big as to buy amd. i have always liked via chipsets over intels, but i am a minority. for the rest, sis has grabbed alot of via marketshare, intel chipsets are getting sold more than ever. looks like via will have to concentrate on holding their ground in their core business. i really hope however that amd can get a partner where both parties get more out of it than if they were working alone. maybe something for nvidia? |

stock prices arent what they seem, jes because a stock is trading low doesnt nescassarily mean that the company is doing badly, they might have alot of shares and not need to raise their share price.

In this case AMD is doing badly though.
Dell periodically considers using AMD chips to make sure they can get good deals from Intel. I seriously doubt they are going to jeopardize their sweetheart deal with Intel at a time when Intel has clear superiority to AMD. |

To even propose something like this, we'd have to look at the net worth of the company. Yes, since AMD is struggling, it is in a better position for a takeover, but so is everyone else, so the playing field is pretty much level. Then there's the market implications: would Via really want to expand its products to this sector? The only viable reason for Via to do this, would be to kill the AMD chipset, its competition, but it's not much of a competition, now is it ![]() Yahoo has lots of info on stocks, and companies... |

well, if amd is dead, then the sweatheart deals between intel and dell are over. it only works as long as amd exists, and dell can use them as a minor threat to intel.
