I had to reinstall winxp since it had turn totally mad. And I didn't save some files I have in My Documents catalog. Is there any program that can help me restoring that data?

there are 3 problems that you need to deal with.
1. you installed windows XP, that on its own is asking for trouble 2. you installed windows XP over a functional OS, and now you have a broken machine. Hmm 3. you installed windows XP. Windows 2000 for life!

Yeah, pretty much...XP is the problem.
I installed XP and installed 2000 recently...2000 makes me feel a little better cause it still sorta looks like Windows 98 SE... XP on the other hand is all...bleh.

Did you format?
If so the formatted data on that partition are almost not recoverable. You might want to try undelete from the company that does diskkeeper (doesnt remenber the name) It might be able to get back those file. |

PlawsWorth: I have to agree with everyone else on this matter. The files are almost for sure gone. XP and 2000 can NOT be reinstalled " on top of themselves" and MS prevents this by forced deletion of the System Root folder (normally WinNT or Windows under XP) AND the Documents and Settings folder (where your My Documents folder is kept).
The only thing you can try to recover your files are UNDELETE programs. I think Norton has an product like that or some other Third Party software maker has undelete programs. My advise though; breath in DEEP, accept your losses, blame everything on MS, and install 2000 ![]()

Reinstalling windows xp or 2000 on an already installed one will not delete documents and settings. It will even create the user administrator as administrator.computername. I've done it many time, reinstalling over an already installed w2k or wxp will simply delete some files of the winnt or windows folder (not all, since most dll in the system32 are still there so many application already installed will still work, but will not have their reg keys.) If you didn't do a format, maybe you should try a search for the files. Also, on the undelete web site, there is a free ware to view deleted files |

The files are still there, but not easily recoverable. Try suggestion above.
The freakiest thing happened to me, some time back: I had copied the Windows 95 CD onto my hard drive, and as I was messing with the partitions, and re-formatting the drive, the computer accidentaly recognized an old partition. I re-installed Windows 95 from this "ghost" partition... A first for many, I'm sure! |

OHHHHHH............... Dang it!
Yes Nuclear is right it just renames the Administrator + user folders and uses new folders. But I KNOW that it does wipe out most of the WINNT or WINDOWS folder. Grrrrr I am getting too many facts mixed up in my overloaded brain....... ![]()

Look in Documents and Settings for old User folders. If you use a difft login it saves everything I think. If that isn't the case, and you are using FAT32, you can prolly find Lost and Foundon juarez sites. If NTFS I forget the name of the program you need but it does exist.

Try Stellar Phoenix. If you've formatted, you're probably screwed. If you've written anything to the disk (OS reinstall) you're almost guaranteed to be screwed.
I accidentally fdisk'd the wrong drive once...so I've got a copy of Phoenix around here somewhere. The free trial will give you an idea of what can be salvaged. Come to think of it, I don't recall if it reads NTFS partitions... But, there is still a chance...good luck. |
