Is this a new computer? Did you build it yourself?

It looks like you might have a short on the power button. I'm assuming that you didn't try to adapt an AT power switch to an ATX power supply...

Also, there are a number of features within your BIOS that might cause your PC to come on: WOL (Wake-on-LAN) is a particularly popular one.

Yes, go ahead and disable anything that might cause your PC to suddenly wake up.

I've even heard of a soundcard conflicting with an integrated NIC, causing a "wake up"...

My googling points to something related to PCI, but could include keyboard/mouse.

Glad I could help.

Er, what version of Windows? XP and 98 do strange and interesting things on shutoff sometimes.

Is your reset and power switch pins switched on the motherboard from the buttons on the case?

Also, I had a ESC motherboard. I loaded xp on it, and it would always restart after i told it to shut down. Update the bios and update all the drivers for the board with online updates. I got mine to go away, but I am not sure which step did it for me. Just some thoughts.

I built up a system for my friend with the same kind of motherboard, i think it was ga-7vax (without raid) and i had the same problem. the problem was that the power cable had no earth. i did not believe my eyes when we added the earth and the system started to shut down normally :shrug:

Now I have a restart problem. While I'm in the middle of doing something the computer automatically restart without indicating the problem. What's wrong with it?

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP the regular one without SATA.

Is your system going to a blue screen of death and then restarting or just spontaneously restarting?

If BSoD;
Go to Control Panels->System->Advanced Tab. You should see a button that takes you to advanced settings in there somewhere and it will say "Automatically reboot after system failure". Uncheck it to see what kind of BSoD you are getting.

If NOT BSoD;
Replace your power supply.

Proably Windows...had quite a few encounters where it would be working fine, something software or hardware changes and it starts booting differently.

Anyone head of the problem IRQL_Not_Equal_Or_Less because that's the problem that causes my computer to keep crashing and I don't know what to do.

Check the PSU. I've had some problems with cheap crappy PSUs either 300-500W. The problem was that too much devices, while booting, like CDs, HDDs and all, requires more power (not Watts but Amper) so the crappy PSU cannot deliver it so it restarts it crashes. Sometimes you can hear KLANG when the HDD takes too much power and crashes...

I couldn't believe how much I gained with hi-quality PSU. With my old computer I was able to OC my celeron 466 to max 580MHz, but with quality PSU i was able to OC it to 666 Mhz

Try another PSU.

Definitely use Windows Update. There is one patch that specifically targets reset/shutdown issues.

another thought i had....if your system has ddr, do you have the Command Rate (CMD) set to 1T? i had problems with my pc3000 that couldnt support it. it gave be bsod's random restarts, etc too. i just had to set it back to 2t and everything was fine.

but if its not an overclocking or heat probly, it is looking like a power supply problem....

"IRQL_Not_Equal_Or_Less"

Microsofts direct response to that BSoD is that it has to do with software implimintation of how the hardware drivers are being references and used.

Microsoft Technical Documentation
More Microsoft Documentation on IRQL

This BSoD is usually due to either an OC PCI bus or bad drivers. (I use to get this a lot). If you are currently OC your FSB, then drop the FSB down a few units and see if the problem corrects itself. Since your MB is using the VIA KT400 chipset, got to www.via.com.tw and download the lastest chipset drivers and install them. Also check to see if you have all the latest drivers for all your devices in your machine and update them as needed.

If all of the above does NOT eliminate the problem, then definately consider reinstalling Windows and/or looking for a newer PSU.
