Default Questions about w/c setup

Hi all.

After months of deliberating, I finally broke down and bought some watercooling parts. Now, I get to wait on delivery, and wonder about some little things I may have overlooked...

My design is similar to BladeRunner's supertank. However, living in an apartment, I can't go bury a tank in the ground. So, I'm doing the next best thing... a bucket brigade... I have several 4 gallon buckets floating around the place, which should make a healthy reservoir. I ordered an Eheim 1250, and DD's new heatercore radiator & Maze 2 (all 1/2 inch).

My question is: does horizontal flow significantly affect the flow rate of the system? I've thought of adding a copper spiral loop (outside my window) to provide some additional (natural) cooling for the system. Will this cause problems for the pump?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Why the buckets? Thats just going to hurt flow because you are no longer in a closed loop and also cause you to lose water. Not to mention that you won't be able to use water wetter unless you don't mind its midly toxic vapors filling your apartment.

As for horizontal distance, it won't jelp, but probably won't make much difference with a good pump. I'd use an Eheim 1250 myself. The outside loop could make a huge difference if you live in a cold place.

Yeah the buckets approach isn't going to help. The idea behind having a reservoir submersed underground is that it naturally stays cool. Having water above ground will not have this affect, however it may keep the average water temp down a bit (the greater the res size is, the harder it is to heat up all the water). However, you have a radiator so don't worry about the multiple bucket reservoir.

Some of the reasoning behind my approach:

The buckets are sealable Cat litter buckets (having 2 cats, I buy litter in bulk...) So I have them already, and thought they'd help some with radiative cooling into the room. (although, being plastic / PVC, they probably won't help too much...)

As for geography, I'm in VA (USA), which isn't extremely cold, but winter is coming, and that should help. (Summer temps aren't too bad, just a few days with highs in the mid 90's...)

Instead of the copper loop outside, I may just drop the radiator out the window (supported, not just hanging by hoses). Should that work, without a fan?

My goals for the system are:
1. Quieter. I'm not crazy about absolute silence, but I do like being able to hear other people talking to me...
2. Cooling - My HSF is pretty weak (Volcano2? stock), and even with rather large fans blowing at it, I've had some temp-shutdown problems... (highest that MBM has shown was 65 C... but I dont' trust the mobo temp probe too much.)
3. Removing (some) heat from my room... With all the electronics I've got in here, it gets rather toasty if I keep it closed (which keeps the cats out...) So, removing some of the heat should help. (I realize that without any outside connections, the heat will still be in the room, so this isn't as high a priority.)

Thanks again.

I forget who hung their radiator out the window during the winter... I think it may have been Joe . Only problem with that is you have "seasonal cooling." I wouldn't do the whole bucket thing... let alone six of 'em.
