Default Good way to convert fittings?

I have a maxi-jet 1200 that I want to use inline, but it has non 1/2-id fittings, and really no fittings at all, just stubby plastic tubes. What would be the best way to convert the fittings? One site talked of just getting screw-threaded fittings that were slightly smaller and making a groove in the plastic with the threading, then sealing it with goop. Would it just be easier to put the pump in a res? I could always put the pump before the heatercore so the extra heat doesn't reach the CPU.

you can try some pvc pipe fittings from hd. bring your pump with ya, and look for one that will fit snugly over the tubes that are present now. then get some bushings or somesuch to get the thread you want. pvc glue it all together and viola! no leaks ever, a little prep painting and it will even look the same color. i did this to an ehiem i have that i cracked the input on. sealed it up quite nice, and was quick/easy.

my rad had none standard fittings, so i used a piece of sillicone piping over the top of them and then onto some 'normal' copper pipe. I think this is the kinda thing you want to do..

anyway, this is what it looks like
