Quick question for IWAKI pump users

I recently aquired an IWAKI MD20R pump for use in my new system. Currently, like all the pictures I've seen, the outlet of the pump comes out the top, opposite the base plate.

For what I'm planning, it would be a better fit if I could make the outlet come out the side of the pump, parrallel to the baseplate. It LOOKS like the pump housing is symetrical, so if one was to undo the screws on the pump housing, it would be possible to rotate the housing to orient the outlet to one side.

Is this actually possible?

If so, are there any 'gotchas' to be on the look out for?

I haven't tried it yet, as I'm a bit hesitant to take apart an expensive pump that I don't want to risk breaking. If someone else has tried this, I would like to here what your experience was.

Thanks,
Gooserider

Interesting. I suppose it should work since it is all symmetrical. Only thing is that there are 6 bolt so you'd be rotating the outlet by 60° at a time, rather than 90°, so it'd come out the side, but still point upwards somewhat.

I did just that. You can't get it exactly 90 degrees to the side, it's either pointing slightly up or slightly down, but that worked out better than straight up for me. If you take the front housing off you'll see what I mean. If it was used, especially in a fishtank, you'll want to take the front apart anyway to clean it out. Take out the impeller also. Only gotcha is pay attention to where the o-ring goes. It seems to work just the same like this. I read somewhere that Iwaki doesn't recommend running the pump vertically, like standing it on end, but I haven't heard anything about rotating the front. It's very simple, just take the screws out.

Make an L shaped bracket .
Bolt it to the base plate of the pump.
Now you can mount the pump with the outlet pointing to the side.

Thanks for the info.

It tells me just what I needed to know. It would have been ideal if I could have gotten a 90* mount, but even just getting it sort of sideways with a tilt will help me reduce the number of bends in that section of the plumbing.
