Default WTB : DLT Tapes (40/80 or 35/70)

Looking for tapes cheap... just sorta hard to find. I am ok with used ones ( not overly used and error free).

Default That isn't the same as DDS is it?

I've got LOTS of DDS 4mm data cartridges, mostly the 90M size thats supposed to be good for 2/4 Gb... I'd have to find out how to remove all the data from them (they currently have proprietary stuff on them from a prev. employer) but they have mostly been minimally used.

I find it really annoying that it is so difficult getting a low cost backup system that matches modern drive sizes. As best I can tell, it looks like the current best approach is to get an external firewire or USB hard drive and back up to that. Gets expensive if one does a traditional redundant backup scheme, and somehow seems wasteful.

Hehe .

No DDS is much different than DLT. DDS is pretty fragile for a backup media, and is very error prone. Its also fairly small capacity wise (DDS4 is getting better with 20/40GB capacities).

DLT is a larger 1/2" tape format that is much more reliable and stable than DDS. Its also many times more expensive. The tapes alone retail cost 60 - 70$ per tape for a 35/70GB tape. (which is why I am looking for some cheap ones). I have a DLT7000 drive here which is nice to "TRY" and backup all my stuff... But it just isnt possible without thousands of bucks worth of media.

Default OK, not a problem...

I just had those and thought I'd mention it.

Interesting you think the DDS is a fragile medium - at my former employer, we used DDS drives in the systems we built for both software delivery and backup purposes.

The systems were all telephony equipment, which meant we required 'five nines' reliability. (Odds are if you've ever dealt with a wireline or cellular telco. supplied voicemail box, you were talking to our hardware...) While the tape drives weren't as mission critical as some other parts of the systems, it still was considered a problem if they didn't work right. (As I recall they weren't a big item on our failure list either)
