Seems best place for it:
OK this is really just for you network technicians out there. I run win2k Pro on both of my machines and I want to run Remote Desktop Sharing (I know it isn’t REALLY called that more like remote terminal service or some other such stuff) – I’ve been looking around for a proper guide on how to set up the “server” side of the process and while they seem fluent in the winXP side of it the win2k is sadly very under-developed. Normally I would figure this out on my own through trial and error but I’m getting sick of dragging my monitor from one side of the flat (where the Internet connection is) from my room (The reason I want to enable it to get it working natch So put simply – I would like a way to set the two up with as little legwork on my part as possible. Any thoughts – or is back to the dredging through the crap on the internet again.? ~ Boli

Its the terminal services in 2k... installs as part of the windows components.. used in 'admin' mode.. allows 2 conncurrent connections...... That is in 2k server.. There may be a way to add
the service into 2kpro.. but I know not what it is... Recomendation that you use the remote connection client from XP.. allows more that 256 color on the client side... works with the 2k server fine... Setup is install the componet... fire up the admin tool for terminal services and set up.. follow the propts pretty much.. create the user account.. might have to set permissions depending on access restrictions in the group policy editor.... |

I KNOW how to do in using winXP to "serve" the dektop - it was like that before but its better for everything else concerned that I run win2kpro on the machine.
And that won't work - win2k doesn't have that funcunality included with it - at least it is harder to find. I was wondering if anyone knew how to use it using 2x win2k pro machines. i.e playing around with the registery/services - installing other progs to get it working. ~ Boli

Prety sure you need a program such as radmin or VNC in order to do this, I've used the radmin demo and it works prety good, but it costs money, which is totaly not beefy.
I haven't given VNC a go yet, but I should be giving it a shot not too far in the future ![]()

XP Professional SP2 will have this feature built in in order to support smart monitors. You'll be able to use the PC both at the desk and at a remote location. SP2 is expected for release in Q1 or Q2, IIRC. Not good for right now, but at least it's coming. Alternately, this is built into Linux, though I haven't really played around with it (no need ... I am the KVM type, not remote login type).

None of this is any good for me though - I really perfer win2kPro on my internet server - I had XP on it (with remote desktop) but that was terribly unstable and kept timing out on me - can't afford any special software - nor licences for win2kProserver
So there is no way in the win2kpro software I can use it - pity. Thanks for the help anyway, because it is so stable no I don't need to keep logging into the machine to check on settings and I can leave "as is" anyways. Annoying at the start sure - but now it is up and running I don't even need to THINK about it now. (except for the folding score its giving me) ~ Boli

VNC is fine for home setups, but I would never use it for a secure work place... WAY too many exploits for it.

VNC is what you are looking for. Install the server on the machine without the monitor and the client ... everywhere you want to remote-control it from. VNC is a freeware remote-control software that is decently cross-platform (you could control a mac from a PocketPC with it if you wanted to, or many many other combinations). Only downside to it that I'm aware of it's its not very optimized for low-bandwidth. You'll have a very laggy desktop over the internet but it works fine on LAN's. Afraid the only URL I could give ya for it though is google.
