I have software version 3.4.805.
Should I upgrade to 4.0.860? What are the advantages and disadvantages? I'm having a problem with retrospect back-up and they suggested upgrading the snap server. |

The only advantage is Microsoft AD support. If you don't need AD support, then upgrading will just make it slower.

What about the updates that came out between 3.4.805 and 4.0.860?
Any advantages? |

Actually I do not think that is true. I have not heard of the 2200 units slowing down once 860 is applied. Maybe blue can comment on this.

There is a slight change in speed, due to the larger overhead between v3 and v4. Once you make the jump to 4 I don't know any .??? performace data. They only updated MS AD support since they allready had 2k support.
The only v4 rev that I know of is 4.0.830, 4.0.854, 4.0.860 But now the Adaptec owns them now, there may not be any more. Since Adaptec had some products that directly competed against Snap we will just have to wait and see. Who know they may move the Guardian to the smaller units...... Wish, would require a hardware change. And would not be backward compatable.

Retrospect recommended running fsck.
I don't know much about Linux or this snap server. Is it ok to run fsck? If so what do I put in the snap server command line to run it? |

The Snap OS monitors it's file system pretty close. If you suspect a problem, look at the log, and see what if anything is happening.
What is your drive setup configured as. What kind of problem are you having with retrospect (mac or pc)? As for fsck, the snap auto check during boot. I don't recommed running it unless a snap demon tells me to.

Well I decided to go ahead and upgrade the OS.
Now I'm getting an error when I try to upgrade - "The file is not a valid upgrade for your server". I get this in assist and the admin tool. I'm pointing it to the snap_4_x.sup file on my local hard drive. any suggestions? |

The JVM folder/directory is not present.
check under Network shares and see if you have "Java$" share. Requires 24 meg min. of free ram. debug cmd "debug memory" The 2200 is borderline and may be locked out, reserved for 128meg units. Have never used it on mine, But Sam may have had at one time.
