FreeBSD can be loaded with a few tweeks for the hardware. It was done on a 4500 over a year ago. That would allow you to run FreeNAS, because it is built on the FreeBSD platform. At one time this was in beta and may still be. I have played with it several years ago, before I got my 4500. Search for FreeBSD and see if you can find it.

What you mean with "a few tweeks"?... I tried to install Linux Fedora 8 and the process of install and configure the OS was successful (1 hour and a half), but when the server is ready to start to work, in a few minutes, like 5, reboots by herself... I think that this machines have some kind of OS validation in some place... like a electronic chip or something... |

I have a Snap server 4500 on which I am running Windows Server 2003 R2 wit no issues. The watchdog can be disabled in the BIOS on the 4500. I do not know about the 4200 in that regard.
To install a new OS all I had to do was boot off of a USB CD-ROM drive and install windows. |

No offense, but what a waste IMO...
The best NAS software out there replaced by a basic Linux install. You really should try to get the Guardian OS reinstalled.... |

mmmm... but what is the way to reinstall Guardian OS if I don't have a hard disk with the minimal OS image???? I have the guardianos_4.2.054_full_OSImage.gsu file on my laptop... but is like have nothing...
The only way that I found to put the box on the race was installing another version of Linux, just because the difficulties of the Guardian OS minimal image on the hard disk... as mentioned before, I don't have another SnapServer box... you know, I live in Costa Rica and it's so expensive to send my box to US only for repair... and, another thing that is nice, I have now a full custom install (with a full GUI) of powerful and secure Debian Linux, with all my preferences and SOX comply requirements, and I don't think that is a waste or a basic Linux install. |

not to threadjack (well, yes i am) but what would be the best alternative to GOS? I have GOS5 sp1 on a 4200 and while it will join my Windows Server 2008 domain, it will not import the users from it because of the version of Samba that GOS5 SP1 uses. So now i have a useless Snap unit. Anyone have a good idea of what i can do? I have tried Overland but they are useless and pretty much tell me that no it doesn't support 2008 and they don't know when it will.

Let us know how that one turns out. I considered this at one point but was not sure about drivers availability and did not have the cash to shell out for WHS and have it not work maybe.

Windows Home Server worked on a Dell 725n, all I had to do is load the Ethernet drivers after setup with the ones provided on support.dell.com. Other than that it was a straight forward install.
