I have inherited a Snap 1100 (250GB model) that I have reset to factory defaults. I am able to access the web interface now, but going under any of the disk utilities gives me a "No Disks Found" message. A few questions:
1) The System LED on the front is blinking twice rapidly, nonstop. Is this an error code? The Disk LED is not flashing simultaneously. 2) The cooling fan is not currently on, is it temperature controlled or should it be on all the time? 3) Is the OS stored on the hard drive, or it is on ROM? If it can't find the disk, it shouldn't boot....right? Thanks for any help.... |

The OS is on the HD. What is strange is that you have web interface to the unit. Which indicates it booted from the HD but has problems. Do you have full access to the web interface menus? The cooling fan is temp controlled.

If it is blinking rapidly contionus means panic. When this happens you loose access to the snap. Hardware Problem in most cases.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I have full access to the web interface. I guess I'll let the system sit for a while and see if the disk check completes.

Since it is bootable. Find another HD and copy the first 30meg to the new drive. Instruction are located in the wiki section.
If that deos not work, there are other ways to revive them. You may have a flashram model. If thats the case. Remove the drive and see if it still boots. If so. Just install the new HD power-up, setback a watch the unit install the OS and init the drive. Should have access in about 10 to the web interface.

Looks like it's not a flashram model. I've not had much luck booting off of the DD disc either, it doesn't want to read from Snap hard drive when I load it into a PC. So much work to try and revive this thing...

Snaps can only be read with another snap. There was a user (snap_???) that said he had recovery software that worked on snaps hd. He does it as a service. But if your HD has failed you ony have a couple of options. If it was the controller board, some times swaping them out with another drive that has the same board. If it was hardware, only the recovery services a can take it apart and read the platters. $$$$
On booting from the DD disk. Did you burn it as a "iso" or normal data disk? PC can NOT read or mount the HD. DD does a sector RAW copy. Which means it just read and write and does not try to interpet the data. I need to re-write the dd procedure using the live cd. From the mount section you can see the device ID seen by the linux. Generally you boot from the cd then drop to cmd line.

the Alcohol 120% program i believe can do a RAW copy as well. I didnt try it though as it was just as easy to go with DD off of the Knoppix Live CD.
