Default Trouble Upgrading HDD on 4100

Hi,

Sorry that my first post is a cry for help, I have been looking through the forum and seem to be picking up most of the info I need but also falling across other possible issues as I go, so here goes...

I have just purchased a 705n which came fully working with 4x30gb disks.

I have purchased and fitted 4x160gb Western Digital Caviar. Which have formatted successfully to 130gb each. Issue I have now is when checking the drive to ensure that all has gone well, I am getting fatal errors-

File System Check : FSCK fatal error = 39
File System Check : Bad state 7 for inode I=927534

The disks have the jumpers set to CS.

I had sepcifically asked the shop for IDE HDD and NOT EIDE but after installing and having issue I have found on the WD site that these disks ARE EIDE.

I have also while trawling the forums found the 4100 ASSY# issue but could not see the pics so I am not sure if I will suffer through this also, and be able to use this they way I want to. 2xRAID1 mirrors.

If anyone has any advice they would be happy to share the I would be grateful.

Thanks

Read this thread http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=13825

If your unit has not had the modification or a newer rev you will have problems with all HD's greater the the original size.

Thanks blue68f100, I had read the post but unfortunatly I cannot see the pics. So I know my ASSY is 001 but cannot tell if it has been modified. Do you have somewhere I can get to see these pics?

Still playing with the jumpers Phoenix... will see if any of the jumpers settings sort this.... But with the info Blue68f100 has posted I am not holding out much hope

Is the mod easy to do if it turns out my M/B needs it?

Thanks for help with this

The hd should be set to master or single drive. Cable select will not work on a 4100.

If you mb has not been remarked to a 003, it probably has not been done. You need to locate FB1 & FB2 on the MB. It requires rework at the micro surface mounted componets. They did these at the factory not in the field. So unless you have all of the special equipement for doing this it may be very difficult.

I do not know what you are using for a browser but no one has reported any problems in the past, and I mean world wide. We get users scattered all of the world seeking help. The photos are hosted on this site, and are in jpeg format.

Are you using the SnapOS or Dell's? and what OS version?

The WD drives are fine. The 4100 can use them with out any problem on a good unit. The early 1000 and 2000 models had problem with some of the interfaces.

Thanks Blue,

I went back and took another look at the thread and found the the links to the pics at the bottom of the post.

Checked the m/b and no mod.

Had already tried the jumpers at single drive. Not sure there is a lot of point trying just master as the HD's are acting exactly as posted in the the ASSY# thread. Format fine but fatal errors at start up or check.

decision, decisions.... Do I look for another 705n/4100 with the mod and no drives or plumb for a Dell 725n, which I believe is an OEM 4500.

Oh looks like I am running the Snap version of the OS my current 705n details in the signature.

Thanks for your help on this.

Cheers

The dell 725n is the same mb as a 4400 (?) but WILL NOT RUN the Guardian OS. It is missing a special ID chip and Watchdog BIOS. It does run MS Server. I do not now if any of the dell's ran the Guardain OS.

At first, it does appear the 725N and the 4200/4500 share the same motherboard etc. BUT, after much closer examination, the boards are different. The BIOS chip (not just the bios itself) and some other components I won't go into here are different, making the board very different. They are NOT the same unit. And, no David, none of them ever ran the Guardian OS.

Thanks for you help with this guys, I missed out on the 725n. In the meantime I have put the 30gb's bacl in and I am now failing disk check on a Raid 3+ spare config.

Strange cos all the disks check out fine in single drive mode. Now to google FSCK error 39.

In the meantime I have 4x160gb WD to find an enclosure for.

the fun never ends :-)

Thanks again

Well, there just happens to be a couple of good Guardian OS units on eBay right now (a 4400 and a 4500).

Thanks Phoenix,

I have my eye on a 4100 and 4500 snap on ebay uk both without drives so all being well I may be able to pick up one of those. Already sent email to 4100 to ask him the check the ASSY number on board.

In the meantime I am trying to find out how to get rid of this fatal error, I can the use this current 4100 to store my music on.

Back to trawling the web, there must be a guide out there somewhere.
