Snap m4100, Need Assist and DataKeeper

Hi all,

I am new to the forums, having recently purchased a used quantum 4100 snap server.

Specs are:
Model Software Hardware Server # BIOS
4000 series 3.4.790 (US) 2.2.1 563477 2.4.437

I have been using the site to help repair my system and breathe life back into it. So far, my attempts have been successful, but I lost the help files to the server!

Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I can obtain the help files, and possibly the Assist program?

Also I understand that the manual states that the DataKeeper software is licensed to the server. Since this is the case, does someone also where I can obtain a copy of the Datakeeper software as well? I wouldn't ask for it here if I felt it was piracy, but the advertising seems quite clear about the licensing.

http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix....223&highlight=
"The newly introduced PowerQuest DataKeeper 5.0, a backup utility bundled free with every Snap Server"

http://adaptec-tic.adaptec.com/cgi-b...i=&p_topview=1
"The Snap servers did come standard with PowerQuest's DataKeeper backup software, which enabled secure, automated backups of unlimited clients in a Windows environment without any licensing fees."
"In the near future Adaptec will be releasing our improved download system for Snap Server products, thank you for your patience and cooperation during this transition period."

Since it does not appear that Adaptec has provided the improved download system (yet), can someone here help me out??

Thanks in advance!

Dataquest does not work with XP or vista. It does work if your still running Win98 or NT.

The help files use to come with the OS, as well as JVM, S2S and Assist. Adaptec use to give assit to users on email request.

Check to make sure your 4100 has had the modification or revised MB in it, sticky at top of thread. Other wise you will have a stability problem. If not you do not want to install HD >60gig.

V3 OS has some issues with XP the reason v4 was released.

I am in fact running several boxes with win2k, and 1 xp box.

After submitting feedback (Adaptec's website wouldnt allow me to submit an 'Ask' request for free), Adaptec did reply this morning with an email and directions to download Assist v4.0.860 and the OS version upgrade to 3.4.807.

I am guessing that either DataKeeper is included with the Assist Install, or it is a separate installation, which they did not include, any idea which is tr

I have looked at the MB, and it does not have the Mod (it's a -001 MoBo). I don't mind doing SMT rework, but I am unsure where to obtain the SMT Ferrite Bead, but I did read somewhere that the resistor needed was a 10k SMT res. This unit, however, came with 60GB drives already installed, so I fully understand now that I must either mod the MoBo to install larger drives or just get a different Snap server altogether.

I don't seem to be having problems with the XP box with the OS version that is installed right now (3.4.790), because it uploaded about 3+ gigs of MP3 & WMA files without a problem. With this in mind, should I not bother with using the upgrade to v3.4.807 that Adaptec has made available to me?

The help files are installed with an OS install...

Datakeeper is no longer supported or supplied as far as I know...

Datakeeper is a seperate program for download. I have found that Synctoy by MS is a good free program for backup. As you know assist is needed if the unit is reset to factory, v4 is backward compatiable. If they offered the OS to you, take it. There was some minor bug fixes in the OS. The 4100 does not support LBA48bit addressing. So NO HD >137gig.

The resistor is 10 ohm not 10k. Snap did not bother reworking any unit that was <240 gig. I would not upgrade the HD's if your mb has not been repaired. But I would go ahead and upgrade to 807.

If you look for a replacement I would look for a Snap 4200,4400,4500 All Guardian OS units. But you must buy them complete with at least 1 HD installed with the OS installed on it. Then you will not have the 1T limit and will have Vista support with the current OS. There was at least one user that installed 4 x 750gig HD's with out issues.

I did some googling and found this site which links to several freeware backup (and disk image) utilities:

FYI,

I was able to upgrade the OS to 807, but it did not come with help files, Java or anything else.

Thanks!

There are a lot of cloaning software out there. One of the best comes with all linux/unix OS's called Digital Dolly (DD). Some of them try to interpet the data, those normally allways fail on the modified XFS files system used on the snaps. DD allows you to send your images to the snaps, full network support.

The Synctoy is a MS product/utility that MS released to the public yrs ago. It works with the snaps servers. A lot of backup programs do not allow you to send to servers just local drives.

I just purchased 2 Snap 4100 boxes and I am trying to get them running. Could you help me with a copy of the Assist software? Thanks a ton!
