I was wondering what partition type the snap server was? Has anyone ever tried to mount any of these partitions in linux?
Does anyone know anything about the BIOS/bootstrap for this device. I was looking into OpenWRT and wonder if I can get it to work on the snap server. WebDawg |

Thats what everyone keeps telling me but the thing is that isnt the entire SNAP OS stored on the hard drive.
What does it matter what filesystem it uses if I am just going to use a new one? Someone mentioned that the snap server 2200 still did have flash on it. If so is it not just a standard install and boot? WebDawg |

The Snap OS was bult off BSD, this is not compatiable with any Linux system. Then they modified the XFS more so it's not std at all.
The Snap OS is conisdered a CLOSED System.

Someone else told me that to. I have acquired a disk image and it makes little difference to me now but one more thing.
The system is closed and on this 2200 the OS is stored on the harddrive. Thier must be a flash chip on the server with a basic boot loader? FLASH + HD = WORKING SYSTEM? Mike |

Yes, but rememeber it looks for a HW signature. You can not use the OS on any other HW. And this Applies to the Guardian OS units too, and they are running redhat linux. They look for a special chip on the MB.
Snap went out of their way to prevent the OS from running on anything except snap hardware. It would really be nice if we gould get the Guardian OS on other HW. Being redhat Linux you can atleast see the system files.

I hear you.
I am just surprised that no one has ever got another OS to work on these devices. Maby thier is not a push for it? If you got some type of small BSD footprint I cant see how it cant work? They are on guardian OS now so i suppose it doesnt matter because you can put things like freeNAS, or openfiler on em right? Or do they still use SnapOS for alot. Do alot of people use snap servers? Snap servers with snapOS on em? |

The Guardian OS Units can be loaded with most any Linux Favor. But what a waste. The GuardianOS is really polished and easy to use.
The SnapOS units have a very slow cpu, most PDA and routers have a more powerful cpu than they do. So you want the smallest footprint you can get. And remember these units were made with Win98 and NT were king.

![]() The Guardian OS is by far the best NAS and File Serving OS out there. This BTW is in part why they can ask so much for their equipment and be asshats to joe sixpack users. The Corp Enterprise community knows it is the best and will pay for it. |
