Hi folks.
I'll soon be upgrading the 256meg ram in my 410 to 1 gig. It will be (2) sticks of Adaptec ram purchased from CDW. Is there anything special about doing this? Do I have to get into the root system via my null modem cable and tell the system it now has 1gig? The downloaded documentation simply says to pop the hood take out ram insert new ram and close it up, start server. Things rarely go that easy around here. Thanks Tim Last edited by teastman; 06-25-2008 at 04:37 AM. |

Well first, there are a few factors concerning RAM other then the obvious stuff like pin count and voltage..etc
1.) Registered or non registered ram 2.) What is the max. your motherboard will support? 3.) Double sided or single sided? 4.) Density of chips. Make sure you properly align the motherboard to RAM notches too. If you get or have checked those thing out with the MFG then you are good to go. There may be other things to consider as well. I personally like to shutdown unplug and ground myself out BEFORE I even touch or put my hand inside the machine. I would also recommend you washing your hands really well and drying them off before you start touching the ram because of the oils on your hand. Let a few others post here before you start digging in, to get a better group concences. bitor Quote:

Actually yes - it is the actual Adaptec ram for the 410 model. It's just being purchased from CDW is all. To the best of my knowledge (not having seen it yet) it has all the original specs of the original ram only (2) 512meg sticks instead of (1) 256meg.
I was wondering if there was anything specifically I had to tell the system as far as the additional ram being there or if the OS would see it at boot and simply take advantage of it. |

No specific thing that I know of with the GOS as far as configuring. It should recognize the new upgraded RAM. If it doesn't then it may not be seated in the slot properly. Just remove and re install ONE by ONE. Not both because one might be seated correctly and the other may not be. Limit your variables if all possible when trouble shooting problems.

Power down and unplug it. Give it a few minutes to drain all of the caps. Then open it and insert the ram. Just make sure you do not touch the contacts and use a static strap to make sure you have no static. Nothing is required via software or BIOS.

Well it went good.
Adaptec documentation says that model supports 2gigs of SO-DIMM, in house Adaptec people at CDW say it only supports 1gig. So I popped in (2) 512 meg SO-DIMMs. She booted up and took right off. The first time I did this 5 months ago the stinker crashed on me and literally whacked the OS. So at that time I put the original ram back in and rebuilt the system. Bad ram. Short version is - it's up and breathing a whole lot easier than it was yesterday. Thanks for your feedback guys. |
