I have a SS 520 with 750 gig Seagate STX-L3510 Barracuda drives.
We use it strictly as a disk to disk backup machine, we want to start sending out a copy of our data for off-site storage. My question is, what would be involved with hot swapping drives? What I want to do is a full backup, then have a rotation of drives to send off site...it seems to be I'd be able to do that just by hot swapping the drives for one just like it, or isn't it that simple? The cost of a drive from Overland is like $950...freaking rediculous. Is it possible to simply purchase a drive like the one's already in it, then buy the caddys from Overland? Any input would be appreciated. |

Hot swapping drives will not give you a duplicate set, but a BROKEN array if in raid5. You will not beable to install the drives and have access to the data. If you are in raid1 you can remove the mirror drive, but still not a good option. You need to use NetVault or some other program to copy the data to another HD or backup media. Or use S2S software and backup to another snap.
Adaptec and apparently Overland do not sell the sleds by them self, you will be required to purchase the HD with sleds. So I would remove the sleds before doing any thing with the drives. You could shut the server down and use a drive image program to duplicate the snaps drive. But the Snaps store HD info in flashram so swaping drives in may not work either. The only way this may work is to make sure you have SnapShots and AV disabled. Which every method you choose you must test to make sure it works. I have seen many methods fail. So you MUST TEST it should be part of your Diaster Recovery procedure.

You cannot seriously class what you are planning on doing; "breaking an array on a continual basis" as part of a "Disaster Recovery procedure"... Do yourself a favor buy a cheaper Snap410 3TB, If cost is an issue, buy any other cheap 3TB Desktop NAS, R-Sync your data to it, then take it home with you in a nice protective lockable case... in your boot(trunk) or Snuggly (Jammed) placed behind your drivers seat... ensure it is not continually getting bumped... & of course "don't drive angry". This is called Snap & Truck, made famous by a Massive US Enterprise who use snap4100s and trucked them daily from their 250+ branches to a central location back when broadband was not as economical... I think there is a white paper on it somewhere... |
