Hello,

does anyone know if it is possible to get guardianos working on a Dell PowerVault 715N or 725.

TIA Frank

I have been wokring on that, a while back. But it apears the 715N does not have the ServerWorks chip. And is missing the ID in BIOS. I am currently setting up FreeNAS to run on the 715N. But ran out of time and have not got back to it.

I have not looked at the 725. If you would capture the boot process with MS Terminal and send me the log, I can confirm this on a 725.

You can test it your self since you have guardian units. Install a guardian OS drive into the 725. Boot, capturing the process thorugh the com port. If it's like the 715 it will get to 1 point and fail. It is looking for a machine ID that is not present. Guardian OS like the Snap OS has names for their hardware, it looks for this ID imbeeded ID.

In other words, chances are not... and for the 715N, been tried and does not work. No ID = No Guardian. I do not have a Powervault, so I cannot verify, but David (blue68f100) has a 715N, and a 4500 and has tried to make it work with zero success. If he can't make it work, I am not even going to try.

OK, thx for the answers, so i decided not to buy this 715n for myself, just a 725 with w2k svr on it for our company. I´ve got a guardian version on cd, how do i get the software on a drive? our 4400 is in a productive enviroment, so i can´t work on it.

Sorry, the Guardian OS will not run on these units, missing the serverworks chip and ID

As far as getting the Guardian OS on a HD, requires the use of a working unit to transfer it.

Check the Dell forums for the ISOs for 715N. It is a discontinued model and I found the quickest way to restore one is ghost32 and (rename the .nas file .gho). FreeNAS or OpeNAS might be a better solution - being a headless device makes for a painful Windoze box if things go wrong (not to mention the only RAID is software using the OEM software).
