Thanks for this invaluable resource for Snap Servers!! Been sifting through lots of the threads and picking out good information but wanted to make sure I'm understanding correctly. This is what I have, seems like everything is original, doesn't look like anything has been replaced or upgraded.
Quantum Snap 2000 Software: 2.4.441 (US) Hardware: 2.0.0 Serial #: 52913 BIOS: 2.0.252 Two Quantum IDE Fireballs LB30A011 30 Gb 5400 rpm ATA66 (i think) RAM: 64 Mb (pretty sure) 1) I just have a peer-peer home network to share files, no W2003 active directory requirements. Would I need to upgrade the OS and RAM if I just wanted to upgrade to two new 120 Gb HDDs? 2) How about if >120 Gb HDDs? I believe I would need SnapOS 3.4.805 and Assist.exe but I have neither of these. Any "help" to kool_bean@bellsouth.net would be appreciated. 3) At what HDD disk size is a RAM upgrade necessary? 4) At what HDD disk size is a fan upgrade necessary? Thanks in advance for the help. |

OS upgrade will not be needed unless you need large disk support (>137gig). 120 do not require a upgrade.
Your v2 HW will support large disk. If you elect to install a new modern HD you will need to upgrade the little cooling fan to handle the extra heat. If I recall the original fan only delivered 8.5 cfm. The 7200 rpm drives create more heat. The 2000 uses a software raid, It is recomended to upgrade the ram if you install larger drives. Just makes it run a little faster/smoother. Not Required but recommend a min of 128meg PC100 DIMM. The Seagates and Hitachi have caused the least amount of problem. The only drives to avoid that really cause problem are the EIDE ATA133. For some reason this interface has a problem droping back to the ATA66/100 speeds.

Does anyone have information on vendors or where to buy the higher efficiency fans that are recommended when using larger drives on the Quantum Snap 2000?
Thanks. |

I found one at Fry's Electronics. It was a 50x50x15mm and need a slight mod for the hold to work out. Elongate 2 holes.
Or you can check out Mouser.com or Jameco.com
