Re-installing SnapOS on a 4500
Greetings,
Several weeks ago, I called Overland and inquired about what the highest capacity drives I could install in a 4500. I now have 4 new 500gig IDE drives installed. I failed to inquire what if anything I need to do to bring the system online. I was under the impression the OS is firmware driven but it appears it resides on the drives. Therefore, I am sitting at a raw, no OS state with this 4500. It is possible for the end user to re-install the SnapOS or is it a manufacturer deal only? If possible, please advise on the procedure. I have all the CDs that came with the unit. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Re-installing SnapOS on a 4500
The 4500 runs on Guardian OS, not the Snap OS/firmware.
If you have your original HD's, the OS is on it. Install the original HD into drive 1 position. Install a new HD in to drive 2. Do a cold boot, it will transfer the Guardian OS to the new drive. Or it will boot in to the recovery console if you had the disaster recovery active when you shut it down. If it does you will need the GSU file to do a clean install. Should be on one of the CD's that came with your unit. If you have done updates you should have a copy of the files some where.

Re: Re-installing SnapOS on a 4500
Thanks much.
Dumb question...which one is drive one? There is no marking on these containers or locations. Far left side or right side? |

Re: Re-installing SnapOS on a 4500
OK, so found number one and re-installed the #1 drive back in.
I now have the original drive in number 1 and the 3 new 500gs' in the other 3 bays. I am able to boot normally to the kernal. What do I do now? If it boots normally, does that mean the 3 new drives are stripped with the OS and I can now remove #1 and install the new 500 at location #1 or do I have to keep the 250g in bay #1? Please advise. Thanks. |

Re: Re-installing SnapOS on a 4500
Power down and move drive 2 to drive 1 position. Install your last new drive in drive 2. boot the machine. Once you see the 2nd drive activity around 5 min the OS is on the drive. Now you can configure the Array. If you hot booted the drives you will need to delete all arrays on the 4500, then build a new one.
Verify that you have larger capacity. If you hot swapped with the old drive you will not. Cold boot will only copy the OS. Hot swap will init the array rebuild.
