silicone is very stretchy... its similar to latex (like balloons). 3/8" makes a very nice fit onto 1/2"

im not sure of anyone here who has used tygon, i have some on order though.

shore a rating is its softness (durometer)... vinyl is around 80, the silicone we use is around 50.

the only difference ive seen is tygon is clear, like vinyl. the silicon is a frosted color.....silicon is just a touch softer then tygon....tygon is still way way WAY better then vinyl....

so i would say...

1. silicon is very similar to tygon... other than appearance.. and price.

2. similar to tygon, silicon tubing do not have the problem of water wetter being absorbed by the tubing (as in the case of vinyl tubing)?

I'm not sure if you can get it right from them (or if that would be the most affordable way to get it) but www.tygon.com has a bunch of info on tygon. They also carry all sorts of other tubing and fun stuff a creative water cooler may be able to use. :P

The Tygon Ultra-Soft Tubing has a shore rating of 40. Nifty.

Read my article "TheRock", or Joe's Double Header 3 article.. We both used those RC airplane gas tanks as reservoirs. They're dirt cheap, like $3, and easy to fill. (Except in Joe's case, where he went the hard route, hehe)

I got the info that US Plastic sells them.

This particular type has a rating of Shore A,40!!! However, the price remains slightly on the high side.

3/8" I.D. 5/8" O.D. and 1/8" wall : $3.02/ft; min 10'

comparitively, Silicone Tubing: 3/8" ID x 5/8" OD : $1.66/ft; min 10'

almost double...
